A $1300 punch to the stomach!

I posted earlier this month about problems starting my car. I finally took it in today. The shop brought up other issues that I had already been told about and other issues that I suspected.

New starter, which I susptected
Oil pan gasket - I susptected a leak for quite some time
Power steering fluid dirty - I knew about that
Air filter - I knew
New spark plugs - I'm not surprised
And and minor maintenance

For over a year now I've been told I need to replace my clutch. That's going to cost another $1300, which I can't afford today.

sorry but you got butt raped by an elephant.

1) Starter - a few 12 or 10 mm bolts, and some wires.
2) PS Fluid- what colour is it supposed to be, hot pink?
3) Air Filter - 5 mins
4) Plugs - another 15 if that.

whats minor maintenance?

man this car is meant to be worked on by the owner. I do not see why car owners do not take a bigger part in maintaining their cars. I understand if your old and can't bend your back, but come on Jeffrey

i dont know if he paid 1300 to get all of those. i think the $1300 punch is finding out that the clutch will cost that much?

Oh no...1300 for the work not including the clutch. I guess this is what happens when you don't know anything about cars - you pay way too much for someone else to do the work.

i'd have told them to kiss my ass and done all that myself, and my clutch with the help of a friend. the most i've ever gotten close to paying for a clutch job is 400. 1300 is insane.

Lesson learned, ask here before paying anyone to do that work to your car

im thinking my clutch is starting to go, but ive never owned a manual car long enough to experience the joys of replacing the clutch.. what are signs of the clutch going? weird jerky movements, high grab points?

If you can feel it grab, and feel the engagement point its likely to be ok. You should REALLY start worrying when you can't feel it, and the RPM's rise and the speedometer doesn't lol.

Holy shit you got raped... Starter takes all of 15 to 20 minutes to take out / put back in with basic tools. GG I think I paid $100 for a new starter at autozone.

1300 for a clutch?

a clutch job locally, which is expensive due to little competition and import fees is 600-700 parts included on something as simple as an accord.

Reminds me of the time the Acura dealership tried to charge me 3000.00 for a clutch replacement.

Then again it's the same place that has $185 charge to run the codes on your CEL.

wow a clutch replacement around here for a fwd is 300(been there done that a few times). Now thats a small shop, not a stealership. Do the rest yourself invest in a manual and go to work.

Matt if u wanna DIY the head gasket i can help you, although I'm sure you're capable of it yourself. We did my roommate's LS EF civic in our basement along with changing the valves lol.

^^ Should do a HG DIY (even though it's an Htwinkie). Would help a lot for guys like the OP for saving loads of money. I know we all started where he is and get more and more confident working on our own cars. I'm slowly working that direction and I have saved LOADS of money thus far.
