Cabin Air Filter

Its behind the glovebox. Shouldnt be too hard to remove it. You just pinch the sides of the box and pull it down. You'll see a wide cover. Unlatch the clips on each side and pull it out.

It wasn't close to that easy for my 2006...not sure if the 2009 is the same (I would venture a guess it is). Unlike other easier Hondas, there are more steps for the MDX.
Here is a great how-to for the MDX (1G) (like I said, I imagine the 2G is very similar, if not the same)
I can't understand why it's necessary to remove & cut the plastic brace to get to the filter, but alas, it is...I was shakey at first doing this, but I don't see a reason for it to be there

Yeah, the 2nd gen is all about doing steps 1 - 3 in that guide to flip the glove box down and you have direct access to the filter. Pull out, remove and replace and reverse steps 1 - 3.

changing you cabin air filter can make a big diffence in the indoor air quality of your vehicle. Last time I went to the dealer to get my $15 oil change they asked me If I wanted my cabin air filter changed. I said 'How much?' he told me $120 plus labor. I said I'll think about it. The filters are only $20 bucks and go behind the golve box . easy DIY. saved me close to $200 bucks. They do make a big diffence though, I noticed the diffence right away. when looking for the filters I found a funny article about them.

$120 plus labor? The filter costs 20 bucks.
I just changed my filter myself.. I got a really good deal on an '01 MDX with 172k miles, great condition except for a sort of dead animal smell coming from the vents and water leaking onto the driver and passenger's feet when you run the AC for awhile.. I think that condition helped me get the good deal and until now I had no idea what it could have been... I thought it was rain water leaking in, and possibly a dead animal in there somewhere.
I took out the glove box, and cut that plastic bar linking both side of the dash under the glove box, and took out the steel bar in front of the filter cover, opened up the cover, it was full of water, mud, leaves pine needles, probably 3 inches of water and when it filled up with more than that it leaked onto the floor. So I cleaned it out and blew my vacuum through the condensation drain under the hood so water could move freely. Put in a white filter and wow works great now. Funny part of the story is the car has documentation of every service it's ever had, it did all the recommended maintenance except I knew the filter had never been done after 172k miles because the only way to get to it is to cut the perforated lined plastic.
So I'm a happy MDX owner except for the 0740 check engine code that won't go away even though otherwise the trans is working fine.

I took my '11 MDX with 15K miles on it for a simple oil change. Dude comes out and tells me I need the cabin filter (shows it to me and it is filthy), and a wheel alignment. I ask how you know I need a wheel alignment without driving the car. I get no response. I ask how much for the filter he says $130. I say give me the filter.....slam it against the sidewalk, and hand it back to him saying "there, its clean now, put it back"......I get my car back, go to Autozone, buy a filter for $20 bucks, and put it on myself in 3 minutes without using any tools but my bare hands.
It literally is so easy, a caveman can do it. (Sorry)

Will this work for 01 MDX? My dad has one with 123k and its smell horrible. I guess the filter has never been changed. Anyway, I vacuumed the whole car and sprayed some odor things and it still smell like sh*t. So I think it has to be the filter. Do I need to remove the negative battery terminal while performing this DIY? Thx.

I don't think you need to worry about the battery. Also, if your car smells, spend the extra $3.00 and buy the filter with charcoal in it to remove the odors.

Cool. I was reading the EHOW to remove the filter and it said, remove the negative terminal to prevent the airbag from deployed lol Autozone does not have the charcoal one, so I got the STP one instead. Hopefully, I will get it replace tomorrow! BTW, I don't know why the NAV always show 99MPG. Always reset the trip with a new tank. Does any one has a clue. Thx.
