Angry Hit & Run Question?!

So as usual, I parked at least 10 spaces away from everyone in the parking lot at work last night...just to be on the safe side.

As I'm getting ready to leave.... walking towards my car.... I see a white smudge on the left corner of my rear bumper. OH NOSSSSSSSSSS

Some of it looks like it can be buffed out, but there are places where the paint has been scraped off and it looks unrepairable (without repaintz).

Since it's not a lot of damage, is it worth filing a claim with my insurance company? Will my payments go up if I file a claim? Should I key every white car in the parking lot?

Decisions, decisions.

I know

I will snap some on my lunch break later.

if your car is legally parked they cannot consider it a 'chargeable' accident BUT they also measure ALL CLAIMS and could drop you if you have a lot. but since there was nothing you could do they CANNOT charge you higher rates or anything for that

Well it certainly was legally parked in a private parking lot. And I have not filed any claims before, this will be my first.

i would get an opinion from a trusted mechanic on how to fix that area. if the cost is higher than your deductible, depending on how much higher, you may want to go through your insurance. if it's less, then no. had the same shit happen to me but in my front driver side fender. paid out of my pocket cuz my body guy quoted me less than my deductible.

But what if I wanted an aero bumper.

The paint on my rear bumper is dull anyways.

Seems as if it were repainted before, but with spray cans.

I'll see what I can fucking do. Fuck.

Hopefully there's a body shop that can quote me $500 to repaint that corner.

I don't even know what my deductible is. I can already see where this is headed.

Bad Karma

I will recommend that you do not make an insurance claim for a small paint issue. The insurance company can drop you and the damage is probably less that your deductable.

Also - don't key anybody's car - it's bad Karma.

If you file a claim, it should fall under Comprehensive. You'd pay whatever your Deductible is under Comp.

Not quite correct. There are too many variables involved to make a blanket statement like that.

Yep, you'll need to figure that out.

In general, unless you can identify the other party or can otherwise clearly prove that it was a hit-and-run (with a police report) then it will fall under the collision portion of your insurance.

Ask yourself this - what would keep anyone from reporting any single car accident as a hit and run?

Some insurance companies will allow you a minor claim like this without affecting your premiums but it depends on the company.

I am currently insured through Geico. This will be my first claim ever with them, that is why I am asking for advice. Is it worth reporting? Or should I just pay out of pocket? I'm going to call them now and see what my deductible is.

Where do you live? I would just get it repaired without the claim

If I were you, I would try my luck with polish and touch-up paint first. If you can make much of it disappear, maybe the repaint won't be worth it

The entire bumper's paint is dull... like noticeably dull compared to the rest of the car. So touch up paint will result in failure. Lol

Aero bumperzzzz

MA has some oddball insurance laws but you may want to look at this article from the GEICO site.

I'd say pay out of pocket unless the uninsured motorist coverage in MA is no fault and has a lower deductible. I suspect you'll have to file a police report though.

Yeah, I figured it's not even worth it. Unless I don't have to pay a deductible. I'll probably buy it around spring time.... after I get my coilovers.
