Brakes needed soon on 08 TL-S...

I don't want to get bent over at the dealer, so I'll probably look for a local shop. Anyone done this and had good luck before? Best to let them order the parts, or should I just order the new pads and look for somewhere to have them installed?

I'm by no means a car guy, so I don't trust myself doing them.

it depends, some places are funny about the customer bringing in their own parts, some places don't care at all.

i vote indy shop, the brake job on the TL seems pretty straightforward. don't go to the dealer, unless you want your butt to hurt for days.

i notice you're in MD, call 311 garage. they are in essex, they do a good job and have always been honest with me. good luck whichever route you take.

Buy the pads cheap from one of our vendors, and take it to an indy shop. You'll be done in no time. The pads are very easy to replace.

There are a lot of places to get parts from. If you are looking for an improvement over what you already have, you can get some consultation from us and we can provide you with some more specifics on what to bring to your installer.

We need to know if you want performance oriented parts or just replacement parts. If you just want replacement parts buy them from the local shop. If you want performance parts check out our website or give us a call.

Also do you just need pads or pads and rotors?

Try to do it yourself. There are a lot of people here with good info for changing the brakes yourself. Buy the better parts instead of just using the same level of performance from standard brakes. You still get cheaper prices. Have more questions, ask any one of us.

Despite how easy they are said to be...i really don't do cars, and it's winter so I don't really have a place to do the work anyway. I really don't trust myself to do this kind of stuff.

I recently had my front brakes done on my 08 Type S (auto, 36k miles) at the dealer. To give you an idea on prices, I paid $150 for oem front pads and $180 for labor (resurfaced rotors and installed pads). Total of $316. Not cheap. I'm not a diy car guy either, but I know the guys who work on my car at the dealer, so I didn't mind the price and the added peace of mind.

Many people say the rotors don't need to be resurfaced (the biggest expense); find people you can trust and make the decision for yourself.

Good luck.

Well, there is no constant squeak yet, just hear it once in a while, so I'm interested to hear what they say when I take it in for a B12 service. Thanks though!

I really thought they'd need to be replaced by now, seeing as I only got 26k out of my first set of front OEM pads, and i'm alost to 57k now. I don't think my driving style has relaxed too much, though the honeymoon is pretty much over.

I got my pads from here --> https://www.acurapartssource.com/

I bought pads from this dealer three times (prior to the Type S, I had an '06 6MT, replaced pads at 28k and again at 57k). $148 + $8 shipping.

They're listed for over $200 at my local dealer and they wouldn't price match.

if you are upgrading the pads from oem id change the rotors

drilled/slotted stoptech rotors(f/r), brembo hps pads(f/r) and motul 5.1

also at most shops, they will bang people over the head that bring their own parts, why? because they make money off the parts therefore can give you a better price on the labor, cant do that when you bring your own parts

If you want to replace your OEM with performance pads, check with our vendors. If you want to replace OEM with OEM feeling pads, then try Cmax Gold pads from Autozone. Some members have had good luck with them and they have a lifetime warranty. So, if you wear them out, just take them back for a free replacement. They are $60.00 I think for a set (fronts).

"IF" I wear them out? You can get pads that never wear out?

They are... I actually bought them from their store on Ebay. They come in original packaging, sealed with all the stuff you need. Guess a picture of them would've come in handy right about now. Like I said, they're genuine oem parts; I've bought them three separate times and my guys at the dealer have installed them each time and have confirmed they're oem. Never had any issues; the pads bite like new oem brembos, they also dust like new oem brembos - because they are new oem brembos.

The Racingbrake one-piece open-slots just came out for this car...those really would be the best ones available.

Though I'm not a fan of getting ripped off at the stealership, the only reason I'd consider going that route is that they have the lathe that resurfaces the rotors ON THE CAR. That way, the new surface is perfectly perpendicular to the wheel hub and spindle. Otherwise, consider replacing the rotors.

Is this normal wear on a set of pads for a TL (25-30K) ? My '03 accord lasted 100K til the rear indicators started to squeal. I realize that the accord is lighter and 5MT but wow!

Judging brake life on miles is pretty unrealistic, to be honest. The type of driving you do plays a big part. Having been to HI a number of times, I am not surprised you can get so many miles out of brakes.

Basically, if your rotors are not causing pulsing (not warped and meet run out specs) during braking, are smooth and ungrooved and meet thickness specs (23mm), there's no reason to resurface or replace them. FYI, my original rotors are still within spec at 108K miles (OEM pads lasted 63K, RB ET300 pads since then).

A proper bed-in procedure should eliminate any old pad material and deposit an appropriate amount of new pad material to produce noise free braking. A lot of brake shops will tell you to resurface the rotors but that's totally unnecessary and takes life out of the rotors. In fact, Acura issued a Service News article (Dec, 2010, quoted below) specifically telling dealers not to resurface rotors unless they don't meet run out/parallelism specs.

Since you don't plan on installing the pads yourself, you'll need to confirm that the shop will do a complete bed-in of the pads or just tell them to install the pads and do the bed-in procedure yourself.

"Don't Refinish Brake Discs
Unnecessarily

Back in July of this year, we revised S/B 00-037,
Brake Disc Refinishing Guidelines. That revision had
two purposes:
• It removed the requirement to refinish new brake
discs. (Improvements in manufacturing processes
have made that unnecessary.)
• It stated that you should only refinish brake discs
when they are scored or out of specification for
runout or parallelism (backed up by
measurements).
But since then, there’s still been a lot of brake disc
refinishing being done, particularly during client-pay
brake jobs. This is a waste of perfectly good brake
disc material and, more importantly, your client’s
money. So please review your repair policies when
replacing brake pads. Our investigations have shown
that the need for disc refinishing should be rare.
Discs should be refinished only if they’re scored or
out of spec. For detailed inspection instructions, refer
to the appropriate S/M.

The brembos on the 08 TLS are the calipers and not the pads right?

What would be a good replacement for these pads that will be non-performance street use and won't generate as much brake dust as the oem pads?

I just bought Duralast cmax gold pads from autozone for my TL-S. I found it doing a search on AZ and read some positive reviews. I was skeptical too especially from Autozone? But reading this forum gave me some assurance. I'll know soon enough. I'll have it install soon and come back with a review. The best part? Only $60 bones to replace the brembo pads.

The dust is caused by rotor wear not pad wear. Less aggressive pads will create less dust but will also compromise the stopping power. This is why we like to recommend upgraded rotors with a harder wear surface and pads that perform well.

Why is the dust black? Shouldn't the dust be metallic or silver if it's the rotors that are being worn down?

I ended up just getting the brake service done at the dealer because they were low so I really didnt have time to shop around. That said, ever since my B12 and brake service, my car has smelled like the shop, especially when the air is on. Service was Friday and it still hasn't gone away. Considering calling the dealership and bitching. WTF would make it smell so bad?

Dirty hands shoes and clothes inside the car.

One time I had a shop install a new car stereo in my car. My car smelled like B.O. for a week...

going on a week and it's still really bad, especially if it sits for a day or so...

Worth complaining or just get a detail shop to do some deodorizing? I'm coming up on the spring detail anyway.
