Well worded. I made this mistake with my 1985 IROC-Z. I could not hardly drive the IROC after that. The IROC was a "weekend toy", but still it was difficult to drive with no AC... even at night. Live and have learned.

Wow...you had good taste, even 23 years ago. I'm not even a fan of those, but the front end looked CLEAN!

 

To the best that I could tell, lexan is legal for street use in Texas. However, I would think that the windshield needs to remain oem to be legal.

The lexan (polycarbonate) is a low priority mod for me at this point in time. I have estimated the weight savings for the lexan to be approximately 40 pounds. This is for the two rear door windows and regulators (window motors), and the rear window.

It won't be until perhaps the winter of 2011 before I do the lexan windows. This winter is reserved for working on my new project, nitrous/methanol injection. And right now, I am staying out of the garage.... too hot

have you thought about a smaller radiator? the 2000 Hyundai tiburon rad is about the same size as ours but weighs less

 

It is definitley too hot to do anything! I replaced a water pump on another car two weeks ago outside. It was @92 degrees outside and I got sunburned. But in the garage it was @110-115 degrees. I'd do it that way again in a heartbeat!

 

and do you see his cooling mods..., i seriously doubt he would want to go to a smaller radiator

It looks like suspension & rotors is all that's left.. unless you find a gas tank to swap out the old one with. I think there are some small cell tanks that might work.

I can't believe how much weight you have taken off the TL. That thing must UHAUL.

Do you have any plans on doing on exhaust? That would free up alot of power since you are bottlenecking with the factory piping. Trust me, you can make it quiet with an aftermarket exhaust. Throw on a Magnaflow 12640 (2.5") or 12641 (3") and it will really quiet it down to the point of 0 rasp and almost no highway drone.

I have never had nitrous on my TL. However, a custom nitrous methanol system is in the process of being installed in the upcoming months. It will probably be during the winter when it gets finished because the weather is too hot now to do much work on the car.

I thought it would be amusing to use the new bottles as a scale reference for the photos.

I am surprised that I didn't remove it sooner. Originally, I thought that the carpet didn't weigh that much. However, I needed to find something to remove to compensate for the weight that I will be adding with the nitrous methanol system that am installing in the upcoming months.

Once I got the carpet out and weighed it, I was surprised that it weighed that much. The carpet removal will go a long ways to paying for the nitrous methanol system, weight wise.

 

Hey inaccurate...I saw a pic on rodneys computer that you had taken. It looked like you took the pic from all the way towards the inside rear of the car and it really showed what the car looked like totally gutted. Really cool pic. Can you post that one?

Do you use your bluetooth controls on the steering wheel?

When ever I'm making a quick turn that involves both hands, I always run into the handsfree/bluetooth controls. I'm wanting to remove these buttons.

i would think more of being able to shave more weight though, with a lighter exhaust then the factory one



also inaccurate, you should cut out the interior section of the doors, then put like a nice piece of CF over it to make it look nice and such (and covering any possible sharp edges in the process too)(and you would mount the interior door handles to the cf panel)

hey inaccurate i know how you can save some more weight also...., but depends on how functional you still want your rear doors though


but basically replace the rear doors hinges with some angle aluminum, just cut a couple little sections, drill some holes, and mount with the stock bolts (you might actually have to get a couple of bolts though, since iirc the 3rd gen uses studs on the inner part of the hinge though )

then for the latch part, just make a couple of spacers, so when you put the bolts through the door itself into where the old striker plate bolted, it does not crush, and deform the sheetmetal (couple of washers should do, if you are lazy)

 

ditch the sound deadener and you will save atleast 30lbs

 

Atleast your car will be "like new" when you put it all back together once you decide a shell isn't fun anymore.

 

I don't quite understand. Congrats on cutting back some weight but its a midsize luxury sedan. Two each their own. Glad you're happy with the results.

 

If I may, a couple of things that I noticed when I skimmed over you could still save on.

A lighter rear view mirror, the behemoth in our cars looks like it weighs at 3-4lbs more then a basic one.

A nice aftermarket wheel, like a Nardi Deep Corn or Momo Monte Carlo with a hub, you're looking at probably 10-14lbs of savings.

And finally, if you really aren't going back, get some dry ice and get rid of that sound deadening. You could be looking at up to 40lbs between in the interior and trunk. Thats really all I could think of off the top of my head. You're pretty damn close to that race TL's weight so I don't see much more being able to be removed.

A couple of suggestions...
*Electric radiator fans.
*Attack the dashboard. Remove it completely and replace it with a simple 16 guage aluminum sheet or fab a simple 3-ply CF dash. This would be a nice project and would allow your creative juices to flow. Something like this...

*EGR Delete and Evap Canister Delete.
*Since you won't delete the A/C because it's mostly hot there, then take out the heater core. As far as the engine goes just loop the heater core in/out together in the engine bay. Removing this and the dash will get rid of alot of weight.
