This has been asked and answered - search on topic on my post - it is best to go through the trunk lid to get at the license plate lights.

Center Console

Center console bulb is bery hard to change.

I cant remember how i did it but I did mess it up a little don't force anything. Once you get it out it is hard to get back in.

I changed the overhead, door, and rear overheads very easily but the glove box and the center console were tricky. I ended up not doing the glove box. If i had to do it over i would probbaly leave the center console alone it was not worth the work.

Center console bulb: The service manual says to remove the center console to change the bulb. It also says if you are only changing the lens, you don't have to remove the console. So it appears from this that the bulb is hard to get at without removing the console.

Trunk bulb: The service manual says to carefully pry out the trunk light. Doesn't give any specific information how to do this.

It's all one piece, not a lens. It is like a box with a bulb in it. As I said, all the service manual says is to carefully pry it out. They don't show any tools or any place to pry, so I guess anyplace will do, as long as you do it carefully.

The center console/glovebox light is very easy to take out. You can simply pop out the white plastic piece which is part of an entire housing. Grab the base of the housing (where the wires run in) and twist off the white circular piece/black housing as one unit. Ta da.

OK, I did the doors and domes in about 5 minutes, then stared at the center console for over an hour without ever getting anywhere. I got the light base and white lense out of the console--there is only about 1/4-inch of play in the wiring. I can't figure out where to go next without breaking anything.

Do you hold the white lense and hold the black base separately and then twist the two in opposite directiions? What are the best tools to use? Looks like there are "stops" molded into the plastic to prevent this.

Secondly, how do you reassemble the black base and white lense?

I'm replacing with a blue LED--wish the lense was clear. What does the blue look like shining through the ivory lense?

Thanks for any and all replies

I dont think its worth the time to change out the center console light. Popping the lens off was pretty easy. I used a butter knife and just slowly pried at the edges till the whole unit popped out. The tricky part was trading out the bulbs and getting it back in. The reason was because the wire to the bulb was super short so it did not allow me to pull it out of the console very far. It may have just been my car but if its the same for yours, its probably not worth it. There is no way I am even going to attempt the glove box.

I switched out the OEM bulbs for the Blue LEDs already. I like them. But I decided not to pursue the console and glove box lights as they seem too complicated to access.

I did get the console light socket outof the hole, but yes, the wire is very short. Then the ivory lense kept falling off after I tried to refit the socket back into the hole. Next, the socket kept falling into the console cavity and the wiring began to interfere with the opening of the cup holder cover. So I fished out the socket (using a hooked coat hanger wire), glued the lense cover onto it. After it dried, I popped the socket back into the hole (while the cup holder door was open / retracted). It is back as before, and the cup holder door slides open freely. No need for the Blue buld in there I decided!

But I do like the Blue LED on in the interior overheads and the doors.

Some please post pics up of the center console in question. Is it the peice that includes the homelink and map lights. Also, is the 1 Single LED Glove Box Light & 1 Single LED Center Console Light the 2 lights that fire down towards the shifter when the headlights are on? Thanks.

I'm pretty sure they're talking about inside the center armrest bin.

Center Console LED Change

The center console light is the one inside the compartment under the arm rest in your console. At the fronnt of the compartment is a small off-white circle about the size of a half-dollar coin that lights up when you open the console compartment, but only if you have the parking or headlights on.

You can change out the bulb by using your finger nails to pull the little white circle out of the compartment wall. The entire light assembly (dark brown base and white lens/enclosure) will come out easily.

There is very little excess wire harness to this light so it makes it hard to make the bulb change. Once you get the light assembly out, the white lens/enclosure will come off of the base with an eight of a turn counter clockwise. The wedge type bulb is mounted in the base and pulls out. You will need a single LED buld to replace it.

WHATEVER YOU DO, DON'T LET GO OF THE BASE. IF YOU DROP IT BACK INTO THE HOLE IT CAME OUT OF, YOU WILL HAVE A HARD TIME GETTING IT BACK OUT. I TIED A LONG PIECE OF STRING TO THE WIRE HARNESS BEFORE I TOOK THE WHITE LENS OFF JUST IN CASE I DROPPED THE BASE BACK IN THE HOLE.

After you replace the bulb, you put the white lens back over the base and turn it clockwise to get it to lock back on. This is no easy task as you have a hard time grabbing the base with so little wire harness to work with, but it can be done.

Once you have the lens back on, you just push it back in the hole.

The glove box light is the exact same assembly. It's tucked in the upper right corner of the glove box opening.

Good luck.

those bulbs are #74. i replaced mine with the 74-WHP from http://superbrightleds.com/mini-wedge.html

i would recommend AGAINST doing that... those leds dont really fit in the housing (too long). the bulb goes into the housing at from the side and a slight angle, and the led is too long, so it pushes the single led on the end up against the edge of the housing, blocking most of the light. i kinda forced the lights into the housing so i dont know how long it'll last and the light comes out from just one spot so it doesnt look very good or spread very evenly.

as others said earlier, you dont need to take the console apart to get to the light, but theres very little slack on the wires so you need little fingers and hope not to drop the bulbs into the console hole. the glove box has more slack and so is easier.

just a note, the bulb housing just pulls straight out, but the lens cover and the black box attached to it ARE A SINGLE PIECE. they just look snapped together, but they're also permanently glued. just rotate the bulb to get it out of the black box housing.

a 90degree led thats short would work the best. 18.2mm overall bulb length is just barely too long, but can be forced to work. their 74-xHP3 leds look shorter, but might be too bright... remember, these bulbs are constanly on when the lights are on; theyre still on when the console lid or glove box are closed, so you might spill some light out of the cracks if its too bright.

good luck.

If you get the right "single bulb" LED, the #74 fits fine. Some people who had 'em too long, sanded the end to fit.

I got lucky, didn't have any trouble.

I am definitely happier with the ones from superbrightleds. as you can see there is not much of a difference in the LEDs used in the glovebox, but there is a pretty significant difference in output for the LEDs used in the center console (check out the output on the passenger seat). The ones from superbrightleds however are just a tad warmer in color than the one from vleds.

Holy crap what's with all the thread resurrections lately?!

Yes, I'm 99% sure that the console/glove box lighting is the same for all 04-08 TL's. Check again.

As mentioned, they're there.

Open the glove box; look in the upper right (iirc) for the white plastic round thing.

Open the lower part of the console. On the panel/wall at the front, closest to the shifter another white plastic round thing.
