Useless Compartment Above The Radio

I am looking for one of the drawers that someone may not use anymore. I am going to try and modify it into a holder for my GPS and I want a backup because I am bound to fail at least once.

Please post pictures when you are done, as I'm HIGHLY interested in doing something like this with my Garmin 260W. I'd also like to hardwire it, so I don't have that ugly cord hanging in the car.

i absolutely hate the cord dangling all over the place, it's so annoying, and i would also love to see something useful out of that slot...

mine has a CD case that pops out. Is this not standard for non-navi versions?

I have the '03 storage one. I put my Nuvi 260 in it, and take it out and put it on my dash mount. I am going to try to either hang it from the bottom of the tray or stand it on top of it. We'll see...

Well, I finally got a chance to take some pics of what I did to make a place for my Garmin Nuvi 260. I pick up some supplies from Hobby Town and used my Dremel. I had been storing my GPS in the storage tray for a while and wanted to try to get it to mount on it and get it off my dashboard. This is what I did:

I cut out the bottom of my storage tray so it was wide enough to get the GPS through it.

I left a lip on the back to set the GPS on when I am sliding it back into the compartment. I cut out the sides so that I could slide it front and back and set it on that lip.

I cut the back of the clip (from the suction cup mount) so it was flush strait across and would fit into the storage compartment.

(I will have to get better pics and a writeup to fully display what I did here)
I slid a rod I purchased from Hobby Town into the tray.
Then I glued the clip to the rod.
Then I took nails I purchased from Hobby Town (I got the ones for pinewood derby wheels) and pushed them into the ends of the rod.

Now I can store it in the compartment and use it without having it on my dashboard.

Not sure what I want to do with the power cord yet. It isn't shown in any of the pictures, but it is really long and the plug is really close to where the GPS is now.

theres a lot of cool stuff you could do with a little compartment like that. i wish i had one.

i would set up a mount for my phone so i could pop it on and it would go to my blitzsafe and car charger.

but sadly i have to settle for a pro clip

why not have it so it stands up instead of hanging down? wouldve been a few inches higher and easier to see while driving. plus it wouldnt be blocking the cd player.

however its cool to see people trying new things, nice job.

I saw a satellite radio receiver that looked like it might fit in there the other day at Best Buy.

Interesting mod... My Navigon is really think like that.
I only use it to store my Tein allen key and XM radio remote. It really is relatively useless being that it's slopping downwards. I'm afraid change would fall out and/or get stuck when pulling it out.

I can build you a motorized piece for that to where you just push in and the motor will push the storage compartment out and the GPS will motorize up or down and the remain of the storage compartment will move back in bringing the GPS close to the radio.

I just sit here thinking of new stuff, and then just work on it and build prototypes of all these things. lol

That actually looks sick except for the huge hole you can see when it's opened up, that would be sick if it came out like a single din dvd player, automatically :P

cops would be able to sniff that out so easily...
my school is ranked as one of the top pothead colleges in the us, but im never letting my friends put their stash in my car at any time

the only things i have against weed is that it makes people ridiculously lazy (pisses me off when my friend can't do shit around the house when he's high as a MFing kite) and DUI... so many people here drive blazed... -.-
