Under-warranty windshield replacement?
Under-warranty windshield replacement?
My 2008 MDX developed a crack in the front windshield overnight. It starts from the edge at the driver's side and about a foot in length. Is this covered under the vehicle's manufacture warranty and would be replaced by the dealer?
I took the MDX to the local dealer and one of the service reps checked the crack. He said it was caused by a rock chip, so Acura will not replace it under warranty because the damage is caused by an "external source." I examined the crack thoroughly. Indeed, there was a tiny indentation on the crack line, near the outer edge of the windshield. This indentation was labeled "rock chip" by the service rep.
I am now getting it replaced through my auto insurance with Acura glass. That's the update for those interested.

Most people don't realize that the windshield is a structural member of the vehicle and is under tremendous stress and strain, so it is quite possible for a crack to appear that would be covered under warranty. However, rock chips, etc. aren't covered. I wonder what a new windshield for the 2nd Gen costs if you don't have comprehensive insurance.
P.S. DYK, that when a new model vehicle, say the ZDX, comes out the replacement glass manufacturers already have a supply in warehouse to go.
