TL for an MDX

I currently have a 2010 TL SH-AWD with tech and AT. It has only 11500 miles and is in excellent condition. It's at Acura to fix a moonroof rattle and they gave me an MDX loaner that I really like. They have a new 2011 MDX with tech on the lot and was given a qoute of $44343 + tax, reg and freight.

The price on the MDX is in the ballpark but the trade in amount for my TL was only $30K. I immediately replied that the KBB trade in value on My Acura gave me $33.7k for trade in as does Blackbook. I also reminded him dealers are selling these used for $36-$38k. I owe $35k on it and would love to just get out of it even.

Does anyone think $35k is unreasonable? I'd like a new MDX but I also love my TL so I'm not desperate in anyway and could walk away easily. I'm thinking of just coming clean and saying I like the price of the MDX but this is what I owe on the TL and this is what it will take to make a deal. FYI I did the samething to them on the trade in for my TL and they gave me $4k more than they initially offered for my trade.

They are highballing the MDX and lowballing your TL. I would try another dealer.

I agree they are low on the trade but the invoice on that vehicle is $43928......you really think $44343 is highballing? If I could get $34-$35k for the TL I think that's a good deal.

The MDX is a nice ride. Just make sure you are ready for the drop in fuel economy. The MDX consumes about 40-50% more juice. Today, that is quite an extra bit ... when gas hits $5.00 again, you are REALLY going to notice the difference.

Just something to consider. :detective

I've been thinking about the issue of mpg. Over the last 9 days I'm averaging 19mpg in my loaner MDX which is not too much worse than my TL....I drive them differently if you know what I mean.

Can I ask what it is that you like about the MDX in comparison to your TL? I've always wondered about how the TL is driving and living with it daily.

I love the TL and it's a great car. I'm a big dude at 6'5" and 290 lbs and like the increased room of the MDX. I also live in a snow area and when there's 36" of snow I have to steal my wife's Pilot to get to work.

Why didn't you say so ... LOL.

The MDX would be better for you - riding and entering/exiting. You definitely will benefit from the increased clearance for those snow days. There is NOTHING wrong with owning an MDX, it is very comfortable.

Just realize that the ownership expense is about $2,500/year higher in the MDX. That includes additional fuel, maintenance, insurance and depreciation. Of course, an increase in fuel and/or insurance costs will increase the disparity. We will probably have both in the anticipated 8-year ownership span.

The most important part ... be happy. That means comfortable - not just physically, but financially.

I'm in a perfect position at the moment. I really like my TL....I just like the MDX a little better. If someone can't give me a good deal on the MDX and my TL trade I'll do nothing and still be very happy.

Some of the numbers are starting to come together but I have to laugh at my local dealer who's Internet Manager is horrible. I gave him a shot on the TL and his price was ok but he was $6K under what the slightly further away dealership offered. I gave him another shot this time and his email was just rude. He said he was confused because last time we had spoken 15 months ago I had "consummated a deal with another dealership because they gave more on the trade." As if I had been dishonest in some way? I gave a sharp response saying what are you confused about? I gave you an opportunity to compete for my business and you couldn't compete. Now I'm looking for an MDX....if you give me the best deal you get my business.

I'm a salesman's best friend. I have disposable income and get bored easily. If this guy had any sales skills he'd probably make money off me yearly.....oh well. Haven't heard back from him.

I just bought a new 2012 TL and it was the first vehicle that I have NOT purchased from the local Honda/Acura dealer since the 1990s.

The sales lady at my local dealership decided I wasn't important. She never did present me with an offer. I even stopped by a second time to remind her that she still hadn't produced a quote.

I am STILL waiting for her call and I have owned the new TL for two weeks already. I actually ended up driving to another Acura dealer, 75 miles away, asking them to locate the style/colors I wanted. I worked a deal, signed the sales agreement and returned later in the week to cut a check and pickup the vehicle.

I really didn't want to circumvent my local dealer, but I am not going to beg someone to take my money. I still have a solid relationship with my service writer (about 13 years now) and will use the local dealer for my service.

It sure was disappointing to not be able to make a purchase at my local dealer, but it is what it is. I did get the car I wanted (TL Advance in Graphite/Ebony) at a fair price. I just had to go considerably out of my way to do it.

When I bought my TL, I tried to purchase from both local Acura dealers, but they could not/would not get to the numbers that other dealers were at. I had 3 dealers compeating for my business (in St. Pete, West Palm and Pembroke Pines). I ended up going to Pembroke Pines, best price, first color choice. I tried to buy an MDX from the 2 locals and 5 other dealers in FL, could'nt not strike a deal. Ened up getting what I wanted at a price I can live with in Pompano Beach.

There's a difference between not being able to see eye to eye on numbers and an internet manager holding a grudge because he was $6K too low on trade that was only $25K to begin with....I remember this guy had an attitude the first time I dealt with him.

How the hell does he sell anything? The only appropriate response to my email would be, "Thanks for your email. I'm glad to hear your in the market for an MDX. How can I best help you?"

Guy is not doing that dealership any favors.
