Timing belt on 1st gen MDX

Any of you had it done yet?

I'm about to do my mom's 2004 and my aunts 2003. Dealer quoted $850+tax for each one, I have a friend who is a mechanic charging $200 for labor. The timing belt is $55 and I've heard the V6 Honda water pumps never leak so I think we'll be leaving them in.

I'm on my 3rd timing belt in my 96 tl

Always good to change out water pump when doing the timing belt. It just makes sense to. $255 isn't bad at all!

^I've always done the water pump at the same time. I spoke with a master tech for Honda (who has no interest or anything to do with the service) and he said that the water pumps are usually good.....I'm still debating. It's $130.63 for a water pump from the ACURA dealer for a Honda Genuine part.

Might be worth the $130 in the long run.

^I agree with you. I'll probably end up getting it done.

Got the timing belt replaced, along with the tensioner. All in all cost about $400 labor and parts together, skipped out on doing the water pump, it was in good shape. Truck runs like a top.

My mechanic said the belt was "stretched out" The truck used to shake a little bit at stop lights, just like a small misfire. We changed the spark plugs about a month ago hoping that was the issue (My friend with an 05 changed his plugs and it got much better). That didn't do it. With the new timing belt in place, there is no more hesitation or vibration. I can't wait to see if the mpg's improved.
