Question Thule Sonic roof cargo box for 2009 MDX

Hi Guys,

Do any of you have Thule Sonic Large or XLarge roof cargo box?

I am planning on buying one and would like to know if the XLarge fits well without obstructing the tailgate or hindering the view from front.

Also, where does one get the best deal from? So far, amazon.com seems to be the best option.

I ended up with a Yakima so I cannot speak for Thule but the way I did the measurement for my 2010 MDX ( think my roof rail and cross bar dimensions are the same as yours ) was to measure the distance between the two cross bars as well as the distance from the rear cross bar to the top of the tail gate. Yakima then gave the max tolerance numbers which would allow the box I was buying to fit. It worked out just like they said. No contact between the box and the top of the tailgate.

I have Thule 635 Sonic XL with Acura factory cross bar (black) for my 2008 MDX, it fits perfectly. You probably need to adjust the cross bar and move forward a bit in order to allow your truck open without touch the cargo box. I heard 2010-2013 silver roof rail and cross bars have the fixed location which can't move the crossbars forward so I can't speak of it. If you have the black one you will be fine.

Just a word of caution with regards to the size of the box, while you are able to store more (volume) stuff, your weight limit for the crossbars/roof is still the same. Instead of getting the largest one you can have, choose wisely and think about the stuff that you are planning to put there, and THEN pick the proper size.

To add to this, it does not matter what the weight limit is for aftermarket roof rails/cross bars. The max roof weight is 165lbs (75kg) with the factory roof rail/cross bars or aftermarket set-up with weight evenly distributed. The max weight for both Thule Sonic Large or XLarge roof cargo box is also 165lbs.

Thanks for the good suggestions guys... Yes, I have the black rails and seems like they can be adjusted.

I will probably go for the Sonic XL to maximize on space without compromising the roof or the rails stability.
