We have a 2012 MDX (115k miles) with electronically adjustable suspension. The car needs new front struts and rear shocks. We plan to keep the vehicle for another year. Adjustable front replacement struts are $850 each. The total tab for all four corners would be several thousand dollars, even if I do the work myself. Will the non-adjustable KYB front struts (Model 339037; $100 or so) fit an MDX equipped with electronic suspension? Thanks in advance.

You can do the conversion from magnetic suspension to regular for about the price of one magnetic strut. Too bad you didn't notice the issue before 100,000 miles because there was an Acura 100K extended warranty on these parts for the MDX and ZDX with magnetic suspension system. I had my rears replaced at my 105K service; but, I also had Acura Care until 120K also. Had my fronts and rears replaced since owning my 11 MDX Adv since 2014.

 

By the way, you may be slightly past due, for the $1,600 - 1,800 timing belt service, too.

Online OEM Acura parts are about 32% less than buying them from your local Acura parts counter and, most of the time, you don't have to pay sales tax. You'll need to shop around, because shipping varies from company to company.

Run from whoever quotes you those prices. Better yet, do the struts yourself, it's grunt work but far from impossible espec if you buy them fully loaded (with new spring and mount already on). take out strut bolts and mount nuts, take out strut, put in the new. New rear shocks are a breeze. Once done get an alignment and you're back on the road with a lot of $ saved.

Regular daily driving? go with KYB ($130/ea), some Monroe or Gabriel series ($110/ea), and Sensen is a bargain with good results and life.
Don't pay that much to have the struts done.

 

If you have an Advance model and are on the fence in regards to doing the conversion from magnetic suspension to regular, just get it done and do the conversion. For me, it was worth it. I have 2010 MDX Advance with almost 150,000 miles. I bought this vehicle brand new back in 2010 and also purchased Acura Care (8 years/120k)--the extended warranty was definitely worth it as I had the magnetic suspension components replaced or worked on three times (different wheel positions, have to go through the service papers to find exact position). I've been holding off on doing the conversion for about 2-3 years now (extended warranty ran out with mileage back around 2016) and just got the conversion done. I replaced the fronts with the base MDX's Suspension Assembly and rear struts with KYBs. I also got the front and rear sway bar links (OEM) and bushings (MOOG front/OEM Rear) replaced. Also, no ADS light illuminating on dash so far--used 10 Watt 5 Ohms resistor in front and 10 Watt 2 Ohms resistor in rear and is currently on comfort mode. The indy mechanic who did the conversion work told me to just leave it in comfort mode. So far I am extremely pleased with the result. Rides like new! Just remember to do a 4 wheel alignment after doing the conversion.
