Remove rust without messing up paint

How would I go about doing so? I'm going to get some touch up paint and go over the spots but I wanna make sure I take as much of the rust off as I can.

metal rusts, paint doesn't. you have to sand it all down and repaint so it doesn't rust again.

What would I sand it down with? Sorry I'm new to this, my first car. Also I don't want to ruin the paint around it anymore than I need to.

Is there a solution I can use to put on a rag and then rub it on the rust without stripping the paint? It's not much rust.

if it's surface rust.. but like i said, looks like it's coming in from the bottom

check here maybe it can help you.

to properly fix it, you'll have to sand all the way down to metal and get rid of the rust and re-prime and paint

you are going to need to use some sandpaper or a grinding bit to grind away the paint and rust, then apply a rust preventing coating and repaint the areas. No way to remove the rust without damaging the paint.

You can also take it into a body shop and just ask them about it and see what they would say it would take to fix it, then they can also catch if anything else is awry.

in IL rust is life.

POR-15 plus elbow grease and a couple of hours on a dry day.

I would sand it down to bare metal to remove completely the rust, apply primer then paint.
