Please tell me a bit more about S mode driving

Today, totally unintended, I had the car in S mode. I would not have realized if it wasn't for the fact that it was revving up to 4000 rpms in third gear. I left it in S just because I didn't know that the shifting points changed in S, and I noticed that the downshifts were a bit rough and just not smooth, as well as the up shifts, having the car rev up to 4-5k and releasing in a just not right way.
I just moved up from the RDX, which wasn't the smoothest car on the road, but I don't recall this type of behavior in S mode.
So, can someone please explain to me S mode, what it does when you **** there? I know that it only goes up to 5th, that if the paddles are used you need to stay there, but what about the rest? Shifting points? Speed? Smoothness? Am I experiencing something normal?
I will check with the dealer about software updates, I have a feeling that I may be part of the upgrade even though I have a 2012.

I know that in the "S" mode the vehicle will shift for you but at higher RPM's up to 5th gear, thus creating a longer range for the gear changes. Once you hit the paddles, then it's fully manual from there on. So you'll have to control the gears until it is placed back into "D" mode.
Also in "S" mode once you use the paddle shifters, you can go up to 6th gear. It just won't do it automatically. I believe "S" is there to maximize the use of the V-Tec.

Hope this helps.

I didn't find anything helpful in the manual, that's why I'm asking the question here. Perhaps I didn't look in the right place

I read the manual, there was nothing "useful" in the book, at least nothing that would answer my questions.

I have been using the S mode like a manual transmission. Downshifting for turns and then blasting acceleration. Also useful for passing on the highway. Paddle shift to a higher rpm and when you're ready to make the move just gun it and upshift right before redline.

Useful in stop and go traffic if you get tired of always hitting the brake. Let the engine braking do the job. Kills gas mileage.

S mode seems to make acceleration a bit faster but, as was posted, won't shift into 6th unless you do it manually.

What you say in the first two paragraphs you can do in D by using the paddles.

I wonder what the acceleration would be in D at WOT Vs S at WOT....You would think that S is faster, but it's probably the same.
