Our 2012 MDX Saved My Family's Lives , Thank You Acura

I ran in to a tree head on without a chance of braking. The MDX did very well. My whole family walked away without a scratch. MY 2 year old and 7 year old woke up from the crash and didn't know what has happened. The air bags deployed as designed, the front windows dropped down, the hazards came on. I want to thank all the good samaritans and first responders for helping us out. The paramedic and peace officers thought for sure that we were seriously hurt. They were surprised that we were all ok and walking around. Thank you Acura, I will be picking up my 2014 Advance next week.

Yeah, how did it happen? More details. Wish you had bigger pictures too so I could see closer.

I fell asleep, it was a split second event. The tree stopped us from going to the other side on coming traffic or someone's house. I was 5 blocks away from home. I'm living my second life now.

I also have to thank GEICO for a marvelous claims process. The loss happened on a Sunday afternoon and by Monday 5PM, the vehicle was inspected, totalled, release and the vehicle value payment check came in on Wednesday.

Any idea at what speed you hit the tree?

Glad you guys are all ok.

It looks like you have the Advance MDX, so I'm wondering if the CMBS was on? Did it detect the tree and did it help reduce the impact any?

Surprised it was a total loss.

Looks like a corner hit ? (grille intact). Tree still standing. 35 mph maybe ?.

Need better / more pictures to complete this accident investigation and file the proper reports......oh wait.....

Glad you are okay. That was a fast settlement cheque from Geico there.
The curb also helped slow/stop your car before it went on to hit the tree.

Wow, glad you're okay. I see from the photos that you have an advance package. I can only wonder if the system managed to "see" the tree and engage the CMBS system? If so, it would have reduced the collision speed before the impact.

How can you tell from the pics that it is an Advanced? Wheels?

Yeah, and in the first pic, you can barely make out the clear plastic piece for the CMBS sensor in the grill.

Glad all has worked out for both your family and with the insurance company. All I can say is the MDX is a BEAST and we feel very safe in ours.

I love the MDX. It was a beast.

I did check the data stream I pulled from the HDS and the CMBB did kick in as designed. It also engaged the dual stage air bags both times (amazing!) and both front windows dropped open as planned. The Advance package was awesome, I would buy it all over again. Its too bad It won't be available til late September for what I want. We needed a replacement so we went for an SH-Tech RES. This MDX is awesome too.

I've attached bigger and better pictures. Check out the 2-piece Advance Wheels and the twisted frame.

Holy crap! Acura did an excellent job on the MDX. BTW how did you pull the data from it? BTW did they give you an estimate on how much all the damaged cost? Once again, I'm glad you and your family are safe and sound. Those are some rough pics to look at, but you can tell the MDX is a beast.

EDIT: Congrats on the new '14 MDX. I like those as well.

Sorry to hear about your loss! Glad everyone's OK.

When you have a moment, would you mind sharing your thoughts on the 2014 compared to the 2012?

The 2014 is awesome. The keyless go is fantastic. The car drives lighter. The only drawback is that the ELS audio system is not that good on this model.

Oakland, how's the Range Rover treating you? Is it a maintenance nightmare or has it been smooth sailing?

I enjoy driving it, it is nice.

Yes it is a maintenance nightmare, it is also a gas station nightmare @ $110 per tank.

I'm glad you guys are OK. It sounds like you had the "best possible bad accident" (i.e.: no injuries and no personal property damage other than *)

Have fun with the new MDX. Driving alongside one in the Holland Tunnel last night, the new one is now starting to grow on me a bit. I look forward to test driving one towards the end of my 12 Tech lease.

Glad your family is alright and the car performed its final task admirably. This is very similar to the new test the IIHS is peddling, the small offset test imitates a crash just like this one, except at 40 MPH.

They haven't done the MDX but here's the TL, recipient of a 'Good' rating (the highest offered).

I have that same exact car and I am glad to see that it performed well for you and helped save the lives of you and your family. God bless and don't drive tired. We are all guilty of that and this makes me rethink that strategy. If someone is tired, probably not worth driving.

Also, thanks for your opinion on the Range Rover. I have been considering one but keep hearing about the maintenance issues, plus its a gas guzzler too.
