oil consumption issue.....please advise!
My 2010 Acura MDX has a serious oil consumption issues that Acura of Brooklyn has been unable and unwilling to fix. When I called Acura Corp customer relations and spoke with Kyle Green I was told that it is acceptable for Acura cars to lose 1 quart of oil per 1,000 miles. So therefore if you drive 4,000 miles and your car has no oil left????? that is normal???? The answer Acuras gives me is that the policy is that you can lose 1 quart of oil per 1,000 miles. I had an oil consumption test which proved there is an oil issue of 1 quart per one thousand miles, but they are unwilling to perform an oil consumption test at 3,000 or 4,000 miles (which would show there is virtually no oil left in the car (they also refuse to perform a pressure test or fix the car). How can it ever be normal that there is NO OIL LEFT in a car after 4,000 miles???? Why cant Acura fix my car which is still under warranty????........How can you treat your customers like this?????The Acura of Brooklyn dealership and Acura corp are unwilling to fix the oil consumption issue despite the fact my car is still under warranty.

Not that its of any help, but this seems to be an Acura dilemma. There are posts across this forum about the oil consumption. The greatest mystery, where is it going? There are usually signs a motor is burning oil. I haven't seen evidence to support that. Most posters say they aren't leaving puddles anywhere, or seeing any smoke, so where is the oil going? Its like a secret oil pan exists somewhere. I haven't noticed the issue yet on either of my Acura's with 3.7L motors - I follow the MID as instructed by the manual. If I take it in for an oil change and the tech makes a comment about their being no oil, then Acura can fix it on their dime

Are you guys really loosing oil or is the check oil message coming on in MID? If its just the message then there is a tsb for oil switch. If you are really loosing that much oil then I'm sorry to say, the only fix is to get the engine re-ringed.

Mine did, just turned 12k miles and happy to report after two road trips of about 350 miles each and some very spirited driving, I believe my rings have fully seated as I had no oil consumption on either trip. It is my wife's vehicle and has been driven back and forth to work for last 3 years, 2 miles each way which could be why it took so long to fully seat rings? The MDX only sees Vtec when I get a chance to drive it
This motor has a different type of cylinder lining and from what I have read indicates that it should not be babied to get proper ring seating. Good luck and keep us posted.
It is a complete shame that Acura touts that line, I am very disappointed, but they are not the only ones to tout it.

My 2015 RDX has a little less than 3000 miles on it,and the dealer is having me do a consumption test on it now.I was concerned that it used almost a qt. so far.
It has no smoke that I can tell,no smell, and the exhaust pipes are perfectly clean inside. No leaks.
I'm hoping it will slow up and/or stop using oil.
What riles me up is the one quart/1000 miles is normal stance, and if you read the rules in the expensive AcuraCare extended warranty,it states that repairs made to fix oil consumption are not covered.....but on the first list of things that are covered,it says piston/piston rings.
When I brought this up at the dealership the other day,the person I was talking to asked me," Why are you even checking the oil? The computer will tell you when it's low...."
The adding oil in itself is not a big deal for me,but I'm concerned about excessive carbon buildup caused because of it.If 1qt/1000 is normal to them, then having to do a valve job because of excessive carbon would be considered normal wear and tear, and not be covered?
The dealer also said they have never had one complaint of oil consumtion, also. They said was the first to mention it...

My lexus does something with a quart of oil within a 5k mile interval... It's not burning/smoking and it's not leaking it either..
One of my old integra's did the same thing, just had to keep an eye on the oil and top it off if it needed.

I've owned, built and driven many several 3.7 powered vehicles. One thing I've learned with these motors is that they are very susceptible to oil consumption issues. Though I've never physically narrowed the issue down through diagnostics, I have (over time) done somewhat of a process of elimination. My conclusion is that it's not the rings or the PCV system. I feel like its the valve seals creating the issue. This is because I've noticed twice riding behind two 3.7 powered vehicles that when they are driven hard and then decelerated both in a higher gear and engine speed, the engine would release a puff of smoke once the engine speed increased again. I've noticed that the 3.7 has considerably more vacuum than all other Honda v6 engines. I believe this in conjunction with increased oil flow to the head after acceleration floods the valvetrain with oil then the increased vacuum draws the oil into the combustion chambers of which burns once fuel and ignition are reintroduced to the engine.

Pretty weird....my oil consumption problem went away.I brought it in for the oil test after puuting another 1500 miles on it,and was not down at all. That was almost 2000 miles ago,and I checked it the other day and it's fine.So I'm thrilled that it seems to have stopped.

Have 2010 MDX and 2007 TSX. Don't know even how to check oil I'm changing oil as soon as 15% service required pops up. Usually 5500 miles between oil changes on MDX and 4500 on TSX. I'm using syn oil for MDX. For last 20 years I own only Hondas\Acuras. None of them burned oil. If I have to check oil and add it I can go and buy Audi.

It would seem burning that much oil might cause down stream problems like effecting mpgs, CAT, emissions, spark plugs, more contaminates in the oil, etc... I usually use about 1/2 between 7500 mile M.I.D. changes. Sometimes other dealership might be willing to work with you and maybe let them know you have to put in a quart every 875-950 miles.
