Interior silver coated plastic peeling

I have an 2013 Tech package and the silver coating is peeling on the steering wheel bezel as well as on the driver interior door grab handle.

What should I do? Paint? Replace with something more durable?

Anyone else had this issue?

You can probably wrap it with vinyl such as 3M's 1080 series.

That is an interesting idea CS. Have you used wrap this before? Would be concerned about the edges on something like this as the center of the steering wheel is always in eye sight.

The edges are supposed to be put behind the piece and glued on so it doesn't peel off with normal wear and tear. I've seen this vinyl clearcoated and used outside for years so it should hold up without any issues.

Do you think the wrap would hold up to the number of touches these parts receive? grab handle and steering wheel button surrounds are sure to have lots of hand contact. I've heard that some wrap material tends to snag with in high traffic areas.

If paint, I recommend SEM. They have good products for painting the interior pieces.

I'll post the same on AZ:

Anyone have the steps to remove this? I vinyl wrapped this on my other car, still looks like day one despite finger oils or cleaning with APC:

Only cost me $8 for a 1x1 of 3M 1080 Satin Black vinyl, and some sandpaper for wet sanding all the old "soft touch" material off. The trim looks a bit bigger on the MDX, and would like to do the same. Most likely will have to do the door handles and trim around shifter while I'm at it to match.

Shouldn't this be covered by your 3 year bumper to bumper warranty?

Wow, Acura really does produce a cheap $50k car.

You are correct on this one! I think they need to move production of the MDX to Japan like they do the RL. everything on the MDX feels cheap... sorry to say and i own a advance one. I recently looked below the drivers gas pedal and you can even see the staples they used on the carpeting and its not even flushed you can see how they even cut the carpeting kinda tacky.... I had a 2016 loaner over the weekend and will say they did a far better job on the carpeting fit and finish of the interior for the 2015/16 MODELS.

MDX is made in canada. Where it is built does not matter, its the parts that are ordered for the supply chain.

I don't agree.
It does matter that the car is built in Japan and that the 1st letter of the VIN is a "J".
Every Honda/Acura that I've owned, which was made in Japan was significantly better than the ones made in Canada and the USA.
A good example of American car makers trying to compete with Japanese quality can be seen in an old movie...Gung Ho.

OP have any photos? I'm curious to see what it looks like.

I have a 2011 Tech and I don't have this issue, so I'm curious if something was used to clean the interior and lead to finish failure. I would expect BMW or VW rubber soft material to peel due to how thin the surface is compared to the plastics.

A wrap should fix the issue.

Found this on a 2G steering wheel replacement thread.
http://acura.bernardiparts.com/Image...l_BII39887.pdf

Does this mean the switch panel is only held by 13 clips? Can this be removed without pulling the wheel and airbag?

Anyone removed the wheel for the wood wheel swap that can chime in? Are there screws or anything underlying that holds in the trim?

Don't want to pull the wheel for the trim piece if I can skip.

Your question is sort of buried in a thread about peeling trim and you won't get many steering wheel answers.

Try starting a new thread.

That link from bernardiparts dot com is the set of instructions, which I used to install my wooden steering wheel.

On each side of the steering wheel there is a torx bolt (you need a magnetic driver & either #25 or #30 bit), after you take those out you just disconnect some connectors and pay attention to how they are laying down.
The hard part, for me was when I rented a steering wheel puller, from O'Reilly auto parts. The puller was for a standard thread steering wheel and my 07 mdx wheel is metric. I used 2 metric blots, from an Integra's header-to-cat (spring area).

All of the plastic parts just snap on/off.
Again pay attention to how the wires are positioned, before you unsnap any plastic.

This thread is about steering wheel trim peeling. I'm trying to pull the trim to fix it by wrapping the trim. Seems pretty relevant to me, as opposed to complaining about a 40-50k vehicle having failing plastics.

I'll undo the screws behind the wheel and pull the trim. Thanks for your insight.

Would like to hear if anyone here has had success with the 3M type wrap for the silver plastic items in the interior. Success being both the finished look and reasonable cycle life on these frequently touched locations. Steering wheel and door grabs in my MDX are continuing to degrade and I'm at the point that something must be done.

I've had it for close to two years on the car, and it looks like day one still. Usually a bit of finger oils will stick around the steering wheel controls, but after a light APC wipe down, it looks brand new. No fading, no peeling, same texture as when vinyl was applied.
