My 2013 MDX developed a weird vibration when going between 55 and 65 mph. It seems to come from the engine or front wheels. I don't think it is wheel alignment related because the steering wheel is not affected at all. The car has 23k miles.
Any clues where I should be looking?

 

Start with checking front tires for speed balance. Of course you would have to go to a tire place. Then go from there. Rule this out before going to a shop.

 

OP: Are you riding on the OEM Michelins ? We have had no problem with the Michelins on our 18 inch OEM rims - 34k miles so far. But I have had a similar problem with one of my other cars and it turned out to be a second round of wheel tire balance required after running about 10-15k miles on the tires - Conti DWS.

 

i had this issue on my old tl. turns out it was a tie rod.

 

Could you feel a very faint vibration in the gas pedal as well?

 

yep sure did. It could also be an engine motor mount.

 

OK I lied. It wasn't the tie rod on mine, it was the Axle. I had this problem for well over a month before I could figure it out. See my post here. This seems to be a common problem on the TL's

My 2011 has the humming/droning from the center console between 65-70 MPH @ 1900/2000 RPM. I can feel very faint vibration on the gas pedal and on the floor in that area. I got this car used so I don't know whether the car exhibits this problem pre-50K miles. I did some research. Some says the drone noise is from the resonance frequency of the exhaust system. For the 2004-2006 model year, there is TSB for replacing the rubber hanger for the exhausts.

Since I switched to top tier gas (shell), the humming/droning noise seemed to reduce quit substantially...almost undetectable. The faint vibration still exists.

 

My car just came back from service. The vibration is gone. They replaced a ball bearing and rotated the tires. According to the dealer the front passenger tire showed uneven wear and moved it to the back.

 

good to hear they figured it out. There are a ton of different reasons it could exhibit those symptoms.

I'm taking my car to the dealer tomorrow to have them take a look. How much did you pay for the service, if you don't mind me asking?

 

Will replacing a ball bearing be enough to correct the uneven wear? A double-check of the alignment would be cheaper than replacing tires. My MDX I purchased used was way out of whack for the rear suspension. It rode/felt a lot better once I did an alignment to move form the red into the green on the specs.

 

The toal amount was $140. It included the oil change, service needed at the 25k level and the labor for the replacement of the head rest stem. Not too bad.

 

Ah I didn't notice your car still has warranty coverage. Mine is not. The dealer said the humming/vibration was from the wheel bearings but they couldn't tell which one. They don't want to blindly replace the wheel bearing. They put wheel balance on the front wheels and suggested that I should monitor the humming/vibration. If it gets worsen, I need to bring the car back.
