Only one sure way to find out, cuz every vehicle will be a little different. Bring along a 5-gal. can of gas, run it until you're empty, then refill with the can. Anything else is just a guess.

You can kill your fuel pump by doing that. The pump uses gas as a lubricant.

You're right about that 55. Other things can happen too like injector reset / problems, debris at the bottom of the tank getting pumped into the fuel system. These newer cars aren't like the old ones I'm used to w/ mechanical diaphragm pumps. That said, I have seen Mythbusters and other TV auto shows running newer vehicles dry and pulling over to the side of the road....multiple times during fuel MPG tests. Probably not a good idea tho. Bottom line...don't run out of gas. Fill it @ 1/4 full.

If I had been carrying my iPhone as I do now I could give exacting millage specs. I have Gas Cubby App on the phone. Stupid name but I got over it and started using it. I can now say my loaded 9760lb Serria Pickup 3500 super duty series gets as good or the same milage consistantly as my 2009 MDX. When new to me I had a 1 gal gas can riding over to my sons for use in a mixed gas machine. I heard the seatbelt sound I hate and looked. LOW FUEL! Lucky I had not added the mix yet so I drove as I always do, fast toward his place.

I went from Newington to Vernon and got off [12-15miles] cruised up to the pumps at the foot of the exit and payed the most [$78] I have ever paid for a tank of gas in the MDX. It WAS on empty for sure. But it did not run out!

It depends on how much gas left when warning light goes on and also mpg of the car? If its 1 gallon and your mpg is 15, you will be able to drive up to 15 miles...

Typically my light goes on with about 3G left in the tank. I mean I could push it to the limit & see how far it will run, but not with my MDX as my kids are normally in it with me, so I have to be safe ...

Of course it's not very accurate, but the trip computer in mine suggests that I've got ~35 miles left once the Low Fuel indicator is displayed.

Well today I was following a chase that turned into a stand off and my light came on. The trip computer said 30 miles left but at the gas station I still had 3 gallons left in the 19 gallon tank. That's anywhere from 45-60 miles left.

My 02 MDX's gas light comes on and the indicator tells me I have approx. 35 miles. But, my 05 RL's light comes on and I'll only have about 12 miles. Obviously, depending on the way you drive, it's going to be more or less...

My aunt ran out of gas a few times so my uncle put a 1qt bottle in the trunk and he told her to use it if she runs out again. He also told her to drive slow and it should get her to the gas station. So she ran out of gas, poured in the "spare" bottle of gas and drove at only 20 mph. Unfortunately, she never got out of first gear, the engine was at about 5000rpm and she ran out of gas again!
There is only so much that my uncle could do

I am pretty sure it is around 30 miles. Just curious as to why the question is being asked. Letting the tank run dry is never good for the car.

I believe there is somewhere from 2-3 gallons left for "reserve" fuel however this shouldn't be used on a weekly basis. Running the tank almost dry is bad for the fuel pump and other components as a lot of debris settles to the bottom and can cause many problems.

Funny this was asked as I can tell you from personal experience this past weekend.

Driving back to SoCal from AZ Spring Training (Go Halos), I was along the 10fwy when I noticed my gas light come on. I was approaching Blythe and anyone familiar with this area knows that you blink and you pass it (and its gas stations). I blinked.

I had gone a good 10 miles, now sweating profusely as my best bud, wife, 1-yr-old boy, and mother-in-law were asking repeatedly where they can stop to pee, change a diaper, etc. I'm looking down and that bitch of a needle keeps dropping. There is nothing in sight.

My buddy is working his iPhone for nearest gas stations and sees that "Desert Center" is coming up in about 8 mi and should have 2 gas stations.

Saying prayers that it'll go just a little longer, we reached the Desert Center. Ghost Town. Former gas stations now dried up. I walked into what could best be described as a restaurant that Norman Bates would frequent and courageously asked one of the "patrons" where the nearest gas station is...

[Accent that you didn't think existed in California]
Yeaye 'bout 25 miles in dat der direction.
[/Accent that you didn't think existed in California]

25 more miles.

The word fuck failed to describe my feeling at that moment. Dejected, I walked back to the car and told the troops to buckle up and get ready for some AAA roadside assistance as our X was about to run dry.

Long story short (too late), after more prayers, vows to God that I'll never swear or eat broccoli again, the MDX made it another 25 miles. Guys, it was like a 1/4" below E and still to this day I think it was divine intervention that we made it.

In all, I probably trekked about 45 miles after the light went on.

DO NOT TRY THIS AT HOME.

I had the message come on on both a ZDX and a RDX and the MID showed 29 miles to empty. I am sure that number would fluctuate depending on vehicle and driving conditions.

Funny, the message came up on my MDX this weekend, the MID said I had 31 miles left.

Try asking the resident female, "Find nearest gas station". Then push the big button on #1.

Yep, did this. We just couldn't believe there wasn't a closer gas station. We kept seeing "Desert Center" coming up, so the iPhone helped in finding out what the hell this was...

I'm confused about this. Just this evening, the gas light came on the dash with the needle on the line above the red line. I checked my Trip Computer and according to that it said I had 86 miles. I stopped and put in a small amount $10 and reset everything and it said I had 136 miles on Trip Computer. So is the gas gage incorrect on how much gas I have left ?

Your manual tells you the capacity of the gas tank.
Drive untill the warning comes on.
Fill it up with gas.
Subtract the Fill volume from the capacity volume.
Multiply the difference by the MPG.
Voila! Distance to Empty.

Could the computer display be incorrect ? My math skills are not good, so I rely on it telling me how many miles to empty. The car I had before this one for just a year, was right on, as when it said 0 and was on my way to the gas station, I ran out of gas.

Thanks,
Kristin
