Does Your MDX Burn Oil?

My service indicator light came on telling me I need to change the oil. I have 6,200 km on the car or 3,875 miles. For the hell of it, I checked the oil to see how dirty it would be. To my disgust, I was down a quart of oil (i.e. one litre).

For one thing, my 2007 Bimmer goes 15,000 miles (25,000 km) between oil changes and does not use a drop of oil.

Secondly, the Bimmer has an electronic dip stick that allows you to check the oil while the car is running and at any angle!! It was hard getting the car perfectly level to take a relatively accurate oil reading.

Every Honda car I have owned (4 of them and the last one in 1995) has been an oil burner like this. I thought Honda would have figured this out by now!

I would give your MDX at least 10,000 miles before worrying about oil consumption. The rings wouldn't be fully seated at that low mileage, and Acura may use a lightweight break-in oil on a new engine, don't know for sure though. My '08 with 30,000 miles was about 1/2 qt. low after 7,000 miles. I also own a '94 Integra with 179,000 miles and it goes 4,000 miles between oil changes with maybe 1/2 qt. down.

All cars burn oil no matter what make; some more and some less.

All cars burn oil no matter what make; new ones in break in period often burn more.
Your driving habits will burn more with more gas (Pedal to Metal, short trips, Indy 500 acceleration).
If old ones burn too much you need rings taken care of.
4K Dino changes are OK but its prob still a bit too soon.
Synth can last a bit longer but often not worth added cost.

Bingo! Yes, the mechanic confirmed there is a break in agent. Also, as the piston rings are not seated, the cylinder walls are rough and have increased surface area and grooves that trap oil. Once the rings are seated, the cylinders are smooth ad oil consumption goes down.
