Cleaning running boards

I have an '08 MDX with running boards and they are starting to get a few small rust spots on them. Ant thoughts on how to best clean them and prevent future rust? I was thinking of using a fine grit sandpaper but I don't really know if that is a good idea.

Mine are the sport running boards.

try nver dull.

its suppose to clean and polish most metals. don't use sand paper. you're going to scratch the crap out of the metal finish. then follow it up with a wheel polish/wax to protect it.

Just got an 08 MDX myself and installed the new sport running boards from the dealer myself. They are held by 6 bolts fixed to them plus self tapping screws for the front and rear mud guards.... I'd suggest to remove, clean under carriage and boards, reinstalled.
The process is more involved but makes for a thorough cleaning.
