2014 MDX Owner with question to 2001-2013 Owners

Hello all, I just purchased 2014 SH-AWD Advanced. Dealer was asking If I would like to purchase what's called GAP INSURANCE for $895 for 3 years that would include the following: oil and filter change, tire rotation, air intake filter, cabin air filter, automatic transmission fluid, transfer case fluid, break fluid, rear differential fluid and also multi-point inspection. My question is for all of new car owners for MDX, should i get it ? Is going to dealer during those 3 years and making all those maintenance would cost me more then $895 ? I plan to use the car a lot in the first 3 years. Please share your opinion. Thanks.

It depends on how many miles you drive. I have had a 2010 for 3 years and it has cost me 3 $44 oil changes so far.

GAP Insurance does not cover oil changes, or any maintenance items. GAP insurance is for covering your car and what is left owed if the car gets totaled, and they give you less than what you owe. It pays the difference between what insurance gives you and what your loan is. That is all.

GAP has never had anything to do with maintenance items. That is something separate that you may have.

Thanks pimpin-tl. It might not be called GAP and I don't remember the name of that policy, but most important thing is if it is worth paying $895 for 3 years of Maintenance on the MDX. db22 basically in your case it wouldn't be worth it, will think about that. I have till 1000 miles to decide.

For me no. As I do all the maintenance myself.

like someone else said depends on how many miles you drive.

oil change ($40), tire rotation ($30 most likely at every oil change), filters (DIY labor, pay for filter, $40 for both, usually every 20-25k mi or "2" in your MID), tranny fluid ($120 ~ every 30k or the "3" in the MID), brake fluid ($150-x1, every 3 years), rear differential ($100 once at ~15k and again ~40k or the "6" in the MID), inspection (courtesy).

do the math based on how many miles you anticipate driving. when servicing at the dealer, do not tell the dealer the MID code. so if it's an A1...don't say A1. ask for an oil change and tire rotation. you will get two prices depending on what comes out of your mouth. know your maintenance schedule and ask specifically for the items the car is asking for vs the code.

Assuming you put between 10,000 to 12,000 miles per year on your MDX. There are a few of these items that will not be due until +3 years when the Maint insurance runs out; unless the maint schedule has changed for the 2014 MDX. Air filter, brake fluid, 6at fluid, cabin filter, transfer case, and rear diff are usually due +20,000 to +30,000 miles depending on how you drive. You will need to put +20,000 miles per year for 3 years to get any value from this program. You will mostly be paying for oil changes and tire rotations for 3 years.

I went to Discount tire and they can place road hazard and lifetime balance/rotation on any tire for very little $$. I also have lifetime alignment at Firestone and take the car in 1-2 times a year (lower suspension on TSX and RDX). I do the air and cabin filter myself in about 10 minutes. I purchase my own oil to take to the dealership to change for $25. The dealership provides the oil filter, any inspections, and washes the car (worth $25 IMHO). I don't think I spent $900 for both the RDX and TSX in the first 3 years with routine maint.

Good decision - think of it as an $895 lottery win!

not to mention that if you did get that package, you would be locked in to service your vehicle at that specific dealer until your $895 worth of service credit runs out.
