2010 MDX feedback

Hey guys,

It's time for me to upgrade because the family is growing. So I came across this 2010 MDX white and black interior. It's the base trim and has only 40000km on it. The price looks to be good 28k. Also the car was picked up summer 2010.

So I'd like to get some feedback on the 2010 MDX, what do you guys love or hate about your MDX? Is there a major difference with the 2011+ model? Should I go with another SUV? Is this a good deal? Should I go for it? My wife is looking at the 2014 Highlander .....

Also I'm going to test drive it tomorrow, what should I take double check with the car?

Do you know if I can use my winter tires that is on my 2009 TL Tech? 225/55 17.

Thank you so much for taking the time to answer my questions.

what does KBB and nada say?

no differences in the 10-13 models...maybe exterior colors.

what is your budget? what are your needs and wants with a car?

the '14 highlander is pretty nice. i know someone who has one. however SHAWD in MDX...maybe a better system if you live in snow.

the winter tires you mention would be a bit skinny. OEM stock tire size is 255/55/18 (IIRC).

The budget is around 30k. I'm having 2 babies now, so upgrading from the TL to have more space in the trunk for all the babies stuff. Yes I live in Canada where there is alot of snow.

Hey hosagot,

I drive a 2010.
Lease just ended and I decided to keep it. My MDX has been almost flawless these past four years - just had to replace two rear shocks to pass my safety, no other repairs needed. My only complaint is the MDX requires premium gasoline, and it's not all that fuel efficient, especially if your driving is mostly city like mine. You will appreciate how well in performs in the snow, and more so if you add snow tires (good idea with babies on board). The MDX receives perfect scores for crash tests (hope you don't test that) and you will find the back will hold all your baby necessities. IMO it is the perfect vehicle for a new family. Good luck.

The advantage with the +11 models are the factory bumper-to-bumper warranty should be available compared to the 10 model. The only major factory repair I've had on my 11 MDX was a torn boot on one of the front endlinks on the front stabilizer bar causing the front end to clunk over bumps. You will still have the powertrain for another 18-24 months for a 10 model.

It would be cheaper and easier to invest in tablets for the kiddos compared to paying extra for the Entertainment package. Unless you do a lot of traveling, the base would be a good around town car. Unfortunately, city mpgs will be in the mid to upper teens if the MDX is mostly a city vehicle. If you are only interesting in the MDX base model, I would cross shop other vehicles like the Highlander, Pilot/Odyssey, Durango, Subaru, etc... You can get the same, if not, more features for the same price if want something that might give better mpgs and uses reg fuel.

I have a 2010 MDX, base model. I'm just getting ready to trade it in this week. It's been a good car. I'm trading it for a 2014 MDX. I don't think there is any difference between the 2010 and 2011 models.

Our 2010 has been pretty much bullet proof for nearly 4 years and 35k miles. Like many have said, MPGs are a little disappointing. For me, I get 13-14 for city driving including uphill and downhill sections. I can get the specified 21 mpg on hwy drives as long as I don't drive lead footed - and no cruising above 65 mph or you will drop to 19-20 mpgs.

We have the ceiling mounted DVD - very nice for when the kid is in the car - keeps him quiet.

Also started to look at the 2014 Highlander - you can get a fully tricked out platinum package Highlander with all the bells and whistles and radar cruise control etc etc. for about $47-48k. Pretty good value. Similarly equipped Advance MDX would be around $60K I think. But I would not trade our MDX in for that cos we are pretty good with what the MDX gives us now. Maybe in a few years, we will come look at the Highlander again.

TL Trigirl is right - OEM tire size is 255/55/18.

^^i would disagree with your MPGs above 65mph.

i have done many road trips with bikes hanging off a hitch rack and a loaded cargo area with two people in the car. i have avg'd as much as 23-24 MPG on numerous occasions and on varying terrain over long road trips (300-600 miles one way). this was averaging 67 mph. i can avg about 16-17 mpg with avg speed of 25-27mph (mixed driving). all this in my 5 speed AT in my 09. oh...and i have a lead foot.

to OP- again, you need to ask yourself what YOU want/need out of the car (bells, whistles, looks, performance, MPGs)...

my 09 has been fairly rock solid with a few annoying things that went bad (3 mirror actuators, seat rails, sunroof wouldn't close from tilt, starter, PS pump, tensioner-all covered under warranty...these are the ones off the top of my head). enginewise...all good. i wouldn't let the issues i've had with mine deter me from purchasing again...i do have a TL which has it's share of a few annoyances...rattles for one....but not near the list of the MDX.

I bought a 2011 Tech for 30,650 with 36k. Truck was/is perfect. You can find a tech in your budget, you just have to shop around/haggle a bit.
The only thing I don't like about the truck is the gas mileage and the slightly "big truck" feel when accelerating. Other than that I love everything about it.

We have a 2013 with tech that we bought brand new, It's a well built vehicle absolutely no issues. We had the dealer throw in 2 headrest dvd player for a discounted price. I had my TL in for service they gave me 15 MDX as a loaner, I average 18.5 miles per gallon oppose to 15.9 city on my wifes mdx. I love the look of the 10-13 body style over the new gen. The new gen looks like a van.

Yes I have heard of many who have earlier models of the MDX and report better mpgs than the 2010 onwards. Does the 2009 have the 3.7 liter engine or was it the 3.5 liter still ? The 6 speed tranny was supposed to help get better hwy mpgs 2010 plus but I wonder whether there is something in the tuning of our 3.7 liters that makes it more thirsty from 2010 onwards, so negating the effect of the 6 speed tranny. I'm surprised at how gentle I have to be on the throttle to get the full 21 mpgs (plus how cruising at 70-75 mpgs brings me down to 19-20 )but my test is pretty rigorous - fully laden 3 adults and one kid plus luggage. And I have roof rails, cross bars and running boards so I ride pretty heavy.

Check the oil level, some consume oil....mine consumes 1/2 qt every 1,500-2,000 miles.

HONDA/ACURA says this is considered NORMAL and up to 1 Qt every 1,000 is within spec.

THANK YOU HONDA

The 07-13 MDX uses the same engine. I think there were some upgrades on the +10 engine to improve its longevity. The +10 has better acceleration because of the extra gear and 1 mpg better on mpgs. A big disadvantage of the 6AT is it will downshift more than the 5AT because of the gear spacing if the terrain gets a little hilly or you need to accelerate harder.

I have roof rails, side steps, and Yakima cargo carrier on my MDX. I haven't notice any difference in mpgs before or after adding the OEM accessories. Even the roof box really doesn't hit my mpgs that much to worry about it. Speed, towing, and/or terrain will have the biggest impact on mpgs. I was getting about 19-20 mpgs on level ground from El Paso to San Antonio with the cruise set to 85 mph (using mileage divided by gas used). I had a cargo carrier, 3 folks, and loaded down for 2 weeks away from home. I was only getting around 17-18 mpg a few weeks earlier going to Colorado Springs because of hills/mountains and a lot of downshifting to maintain 80 mph (loaded down with the same gear minus cargo carrier).

I would still go for a +10 MDX in base, tech or adv if you can find the one you like.

For 2010 the MDX receives a new 3.7-liter VTEC V6 engine that boasts an output of 300hp and 270lb-ft of torque. To widen the powerband while simultaneously improving fuel efficiency, the latest V6 engine features variable valve adjustment of the intake valves, revised high-lift camshafts, a computer controlled dual-stage induction system and an electronic drive-by-wire throttle system.

Internally, the new 3.7L V6 makes use of special heavy-duty components including a more rigid cylinder block, high-strength crankshaft, heavy-duty connecting rods, high compression-ratio pistons, cylinder heads with improved cooling, and new intake valve springs.

Basically same engine 3.7 L, different tranny. A friend of mine had an 07...reported similar MPGs as my own. He also owned a '13 and was able to get similar mileage to his '07.

So It's been a few days I had it now. It's totally a different drive than my 09 TL. And also miss the Tech Package sound system, the MDX is the Premium trim which is the base package with no much in it.

A bizarre thing is when I stop the car and remove the keys, all doors are still locked except the driver door ... is it a switch somewhere? Cuz my 09 TL didn't do that .... It's kind of annoying actually to always unlock the doors ....
