2004 MDX Timing Belt Auto tensioner
Hi All,
Yesterday I finshed doing the timing belt on my 2004 MDX.
I have a question about pulling the pin on the auto-tensioner.
When I did mine, I just pulled the pin on the auto tensioner and let it release to tension the timing belt.
After completing the job I read I should have used an external bolt to position the pully next to the tensioner. Release the pin and then remove the bolt to tension the timing belt.
I have searched the forum and found different posts of people doing it both ways. Which is correct?
Have I compromised the belt? I just want to make sure I did not cause grief to the belt.
Any information would be appreciated.

No you have not compromised the belt. The manual says to use a bolt from the battery tray to hold the tensioner in place if you are planning on replacing the timing belt and nothing else. This method allows you to slap in a new belt pretty quickly. If you replace it with a new tensioner than no worries, you can just pull the pin.
Here is a detailed video with step-by-step instruction onthe replacement of the timing belt on the Honda Acura V6 J Series engine, including the replacement of the pulleys, tensioner, as well as the water pumpand special tools needed to complete the job.
