2003 MDX drive shaft bearing going HELP!
Hearing a noise in the rear like the bearing are going...took it in and was told I need to replace the whole drive shaft in these vehicles! Am I being "shafted". $900 just for parts! Should i look into salvaged parts? Can I just drive it until in breaks or am I looking at a bigger mess then?
Weird, cause the car has been hassle free and has such low miles...61K

Yikes..
I bought GSP shafts from AAP for $70 each with free S&H so parts were $140 no tax. Took it to my transmission guy and he installed them for $130 + I gave him a little extra.
so $900 on parts alone.. you should have laughed in their face, taken the estimate and wiped your ass with it. The GSP shafts are like butter.. I've put at least 15k miles on them already and they're LLT so if they ever go, I can take them back for new ones & the best part is there's no core exchange. I can get my old shafts rebuilt for less than $200 and either use them or sell them.
btw.. you'll know if it's the CV joint if you turn the wheel lock to lock and creep forward & reverse and you hear a clicking sound. If it's a ripped boot you can just put a new boot on & repack it if it hasn't been too badly contaminated. If it's a hum / grind it's probably the wheel bearing going out.. that's even cheaper.
