I haven't heard about it. Does the screen just switch to black and stay like that? or does it not switch at all?
yup, it switches to black..and stays black until i put it into drive.
i'm hoping the electronics are still good..and its just the camera..but Acura has quoted me a ridiculous price.
your help on this is greatly appreciated FiftyFive.
Yup. Pull back the rubber shielding on the wires at the upper right of the hatch when it is open. You may see some frayed wires in there. These wires can get kinked when the hatch is closed and can split. Check this first. Someone had this same problem on .org. Check it out over there if needed. There are some pics to look at. Good Luck!
I have the exact same problem. I've checked the wiring etc. and didn't see any obvious signs of damage. I also checked the voltage coming the wiring harness that plugs into the backup camera and got a reading of about 9 volts. I suspect the camera itself is the problem but having problems finding a replacement. The dealer price for replacement is crazy. Is it possible to hook up a 3rd party camera unit? Could the camera control unit be a problem? If so, where is the camera control unit on a 2004 MDX?
According to the book I have the control unit is in the right side rear area of a 2003 MDX back where the speaker is located. It only shows a box being ther no specifics about it.
Tore into 2003 MDX this morning pulled the rear cover off of the hatchback door. followed the cable from the camera to the top of the door. When it goes through the rear tailgate at the top of the door (Passenger side) the wires are not in any type of casing other then the rubber boot. Pulled the boot back and Found the red wire broken and the blue wire breaking. Re did both wires and camera works fine now. Looks like poor design should have been put in to some type of casing that the wires would not get crimped. Hope this helps
Hey guys, I'm having the exact same problem as listed above (backup camera goes to black screen) so I checked the wiring and the red wire is in fact broken. I wanted to know if anyone had any suggestions on the best way to repair the wire. I'm guessing a solderless connector is out of the question because it would just get smashed but maybe a shrink fit connector? Or did you just splice in a new wire with electrical tape? Any advice would be greatly appreciated.
anyone have instructions on how to remove the rear hatch plastic?
i took off the two plastic screws by the latch and then the rear hanger...but i'm stumped on how to remove the whole thing..
Do the reverse lights come on?YES - Go into the Diagnostic mode and use the ''Car Status'' diagnostic to check the back up signal. If OK, go to step 4. NO - Troubleshoot the backup light circuit.■
Step # 4
Measure the voltage between body ground and navigation unit connector C (8P) terminals No. 1 and No. 2 individually.
Is there battery voltage?YES - Go to step 5. NO - If the +B wire does not have voltage, repair open in the wire between the passenger's under-dash fuse/relay box and the navigation unit. If the ACC wire does not have voltage, repair open in the wire between the driver's under-dash fuse/relay box and the navigation unit.■
Step # 5
Check for continuity between navigation unit connector C (8P) terminal No. 4 and body ground.
Is there continuity?YES - Go to step 6. NO - Repair open in the wire between the navigation unit and body ground (G501).■
Hi I have and 2003 Acura MDX and the rear licence plate lights have gone out. I think since they both went out together it must be a wiring issue. This happened once in 2009 but it was covered under the extended warranty. I need to take off the rear hatch panel. Does anyone have instructions on how to remove this rear hatch plastic?
I have taken off the two plastic screws by the latch and then the rear hanger...but i'm stumped on how to remove the whole thing..thanks
Fixing the backup camera on my 04 MDX was fairly easy. The red wire in the rear right rubber wire boot was broken. Pull off the rubber boot at both ends. There is very little slack in the wire so to solder it I added a piece of wire to extend it. To fish the wire through the boot with all the other wires I used a 12" piece of 3/16 brass tubing. Just shove it in the lower end of the boot and work it in until it comes out the other side. You can then solder a piece of wire to the lower broken end of the red camera wire and then pass the wire through the brass tubing. Slide the brass tubing out and then solder the other side. I used heat shrink tubing on the solder joints, but you could use electrical tape. Moistening the ends of the rubber boot makes it easier to snap the ends back in.
If you do not have a 12" piece of 3/16 brass tubing or some other hard tubing that can be slid through the boot, you can get one at any good hobby store.
Hi guys, i need help or advice what can i do on my 05 mdx touring, i went to he dealer for regular maintanance and they replace the battery, after that my Navy system started to show mw msg like dowloading software and the gps start working but everytime i turn off the car and then turn on shown me the same msg, after 3 weeks Navy sytem went out even the rear cam, im glad i found this comunity and maybe can help me with it or if some one else had having this kind of issue, now i am with out Navy and rear cam, i will apprecciate your quotes.I did not do anything yet, i just went to the dealer and they gave me a crazy price to fix it.
Visiting from the TSX side of the house. Got a call about an MDX with a dead camera, and a dealer quote of $1000+ to fix. Quickly searched here, found this thread. Tore into it, found this.
Using borrowed tools, and a cheap Home Depot soldering iron set, I got it fixed for $25. Looks like hell, so I sent them to a stereo shop to get the wiring reconnected better. But we now know its nothing major.
Thanks to fronny and backfire for their input, made me look like I knew what was going on. Now if I could only make it look like I knew how to solder again.
