01 steering shake

Hi everyone, recently purchased a used 01 with a known steering vibration issue but i cant seem to diagnose the problem myself so here are the details and hoping some of you can chime in.

The shake/vibration in the steering wheel happens under all conditions. If the car is at a stand still and i turn the steering wheel to the right and then let the steering wheel out of my hand i see the wheel pull to the left and visa versa. On the highway i can feel every imperfection in the road through the steering wheel. The vibration/shake isnt dramatic and does not shake the entire car, its mostly only a visual/feel through the steering wheel.

All comments will be greatly appreciated

First of all, welcome to Acurazine

Until you said "from a standstill", I thought it was wheel based. I'm not sure I'm understanding "...and then let the steering wheel out of my hand i see the wheel pull to the left...", is the car turned off? If so, I imagine some self-correction is somewhat normal as the wheel no longer has power steering (vehicle is off).

Anyway, for the moment I'm ignoring the "from a standstill" comment and will ask the following:
  • Does the vehicle have aftermarket wheels?
  • If so, do you have hubrings? (i.e. are the wheels properly balanced on the hub?)
  • Aftermarket or OEM, are you sure the wheels are not bent/damaged?
  • Do the tires have unusual or inconsistent wear? (i.e. two are like-new, the other two are bald ... or is the inner tread worn while the outer is newer)
Vibrations through the steering wheel often start at the wheels/tires. Often times the wheels are not properly centered on the hub or a set of new tires + a vehicle alignment can provide the cure. This statement is what makes me lean toward wheels/tires: "The vibration/shake isnt dramatic and does not shake the entire car, its mostly only a visual/feel through the steering wheel."

thanks for the information. My X has stock wheels so im going to check if the problem is in the tires since they do have uneven wear. After i put on new tires and get an alignment ill keep everyone posted. Thanks again

Good luck finance. I have aftermarket 19's, but I recently had unmanageable shake in the steering wheel and it was because of my tires. After new tires with a fresh balance, the problem basically went away. An alignment would further ensure proper balance and tracking.
