Looking to buy 2008 Type S
I know this is an Acura forum and all, but was hoping to get some honesty on the reliability of the type S. Ive been reading mixed reviews elsewhere online and came here to get the best answer. Just curious about the longevity of the car, because I'm really interested in buying one as my first self-bought car. Any help would be appreciated!!

As I'm currently finding out, your experience with a TL-S will greatly depend on how the previous owner(s) treated the car. In my case, the car was treated pretty rough, and I've had to repair major items such as the transmission, clutch, and rear main seal.
Based on my readings here and elsewhere, people that have treated the car well have had little to no issues, even with higher mileage.
Whichever car you look at, I would make sure they can provide you with maintenance records, and a carfax to prove it wasn't in any major collisions. If you're looking into buying a manual transmission, MAKE SURE you take it for a proper test drive to insure it doesn't grind going into 3rd gear, and also that the clutch doesn't slip.

It's a reliable car, as are all well maintained Hondas. The key word here is maintenance. Once you buy an Acura or any other luxury brand it is going to cost you to keep it in tip top shape every year, because the alternative is to neglect it and have even larger repair costs. When things go wrong repair bills can add up fast. There are ways of mitigating that cost like doing your own work if you can, but in the end parts can be expensive.
I was taught that any vehicle you have you can expect a minimum of $1,000 a year in maintenance costs. You may be lucky and not have to put much into it in a given year, say $400 instead. But the next year you will end up catching up and putting $1,600 into it so it will average out.
Like someone said on here once: "You have to pay to play."
I'm not trying to scare you, just hoping to make sure you're informed about the cost of ownership of an Acura. My '07 TL-S has been flawless so far and I'm the 2nd owner.

I'd even have a machanic check it out as well if you have access to one, when I bought my 6MT clutch felt fine a week later it wouldn't go into gear...new clutch and flywheel

I may be paranoid based on my experience, but I would insist on a leakdown test before purchasing.
I bought a single owner 07 TL-S 6MT late last year that ran like a top, but found out over the course of the first month or two of ownership - it ate oil like it was going out of style. After a leakdown test, I found the back bank of cylinders was WAY out of spec and the block needed to be replaced. Likely bad piston rings that the previous owner had been limping along for a good while.
Again, I'm paranoid, but this issue is not that uncommon with these high compression motors.

pay attention to everything when your inspecting a car you are interested in, i bought mines from a young asian kid who steroe types might say is a bad buy bc they may not treat the car well but he did and though mines came with a cracked front bumper the rest of the car was impecable and when i inspected it along with a mechanic brother it came out great. ive owned mines (bone stock 2008 tls bought with 40k ) almost 3 years now and put on 30k miles on it and she still drives beautifully regular maintance is a plus and maintance records doesnt hurt.

The TL-S is a Honda...so reliable. But the 08 is 7 years old, as the guys above have said, if it was a abused you'll have issues. I owned my for 3 years, from 48K miles to 83K miles and all I ever needed to do was routine maintenance. I'd pay $150 or so for an independent mechanic to look at any that I would consider now. The one I bought was purchased at my local Acura dealer, always maintained with all records and traded in almost exactly 4 years to the day it was purchased new. So I got a good one. Good luck! There is a thread on here for an 08 for sale with 14K miles for $24K, grab that one.

Got my '08 Type-S last July, so it's been a little over half a year. Got it with about 84,000 miles and have put in a little over 3,000. Had some issues early on with the car starting reliably, but that was completely fixed by getting a new battery. A little odd that the Duralast battery the previous owner had in it was going bad even being barely a year old, but the Everstart Maxx I put in has a 3 year free replacement warranty so I'm not worried.
Had the check engine light come on recently for a p0171 emissions code, but that went away by itself. Now the only issue I'm having is that either due to the aftermarket remote starter the previous owner put in or due to faulty door actuators, the doors are occasionally locking and unlocking by themselves. I'm hoping this won't be too expensive to fix this, and in the meantime I've learned to just not leave any valuables in my car.
Overall, no major issues and everytime I see or drive it I'm very happy to have bought it.

Joey, I've had my 2007 Type S since January 1, 2008. Runs awesome-no problems with it!

^^^well depend on how people classify "problem". I heard people said "I just got the car and the brakes already gone". That isn't problem that just wear and tear on the vehicle, after all you buy a used car so there will be things that need to be work on.

Let's just say that my Type S has had no unexpected issues. I've owned this car longer than any other I've ever had.
I do not expect to get out of it anytime soon.

3,000 since July! Drive that thing! I hope these cars hold up when sitting that much. My maxima was very problematic when it sat. Once driven daily I had 0 issues with it.

^ I think he meant he spent 3k in repairs not 3k miles. Could be wrong though.
