2004 WRX + 2004 Toyota Avalon + Head on Collision = Ownage

ADAMSTOWN — A woman died in a two-vehicle crash in the 6900 block of Lilypons Road shortly after 4 p.m. Monday.

Three men with severe injuries were flown by helicopter to Suburban Hospital in Washington and to R Adams Cowley Shock Trauma Center in Baltimore, said Frederick County Sheriff's Office Cpl. Rich Rochford.

Police believe speed to be a factor in the crash, Rochford said.

The three men were driving eastbound in a blue car, lost control or crossed the center lane, and struck a Toyota that was heading in the opposite direction.

The Toyota was pushed over the guardrail and landed on its side. The woman in the car was declared dead on the scene.

Identities of the victims were not released by presstime, pending notification of family.

Police did not know the make and model of the blue car while on the scene. The car's bumper was torn off and the engine, thrown from the car, lay several yards away from the car. Gasoline was spilled over the road near the crash scene.

Rescue crews closed the roads to traffic for several hours after the crash while a reconstruction team worked to determine the cause.

By 10 p.m. Lilypons Road was still closed and dispatchers at Frederick County Emergency Communications said that the roads were expected to be closed for several more hours.

As they worked to contain the scene, several people gathered near the yellow police tape that cordoned off the wreckage.

Patrick Kolb lives nearby on Park Mills Road. He said he has seen many drag racers on the road who get into accidents. He estimated he had seen three crashes in the past three weeks, and he said he wants police to patrol the area more frequently so that people will slow down.

"I'm not saying that this (accident was caused by) drag racing, but it's a problem spot," he said.

Kevin Dudrow, who lives off of Lilypons Road, agreed.

"We have a serious speeding problem," he said. "And we need to have it deterred."
Looked like it was a nicely modded WRX too.

Sucks...

Interesting how the WRX's drivers side was practically untouched, but the Toyota's was destroyed. Didnt absorb the impact very well...

When I first saw the Avalon, I guessed the driver of that car wouldn't survive the crash and unfortunately I was right.

Suckers like the WRX drivers is what made the insurance so high in many cities..........
why can't people just drive responsibly!

This is what pisses me off most. It's rarely the offending party who dies.

The WRX cabin held up pretty well, while the flagship Toyota was a mess.

The Toyota was pushed over the guardrail and landed on its side.
^ Avalon got thrown over the guardrail ... driver may have survived the initial crash ... but didn't make it the second time. Either way ... the driver of the WRX is an ass.

tot he driver of the avalon. WRx drivers are usually young adults or teens that want to race everywhere. I hoope that they are indeited for killing her if they were indeed racing or speeding heavily. I agree with the posters above, the cabin nof the WRx was untouched, but the avalons was destroyed. From the looks of the pictures, it looks like the motor of the avalon pushed back, possibly crushing the legs of the woman, than the car jumping over most likely killed her.

If it was a true head-on, it would be a different story. The WRX slid down the drivers side of the Toyota.

Police identified the woman killed in Monday's two-vehicle crash on Lilypons Road as Vivian Gaynor, 60, of Adamstown.

Police said the driver of the other car was Benjamin W. Clark, 28, of Bedford, Pa. His two passengers were William Golden, 25, of Brunswick, and Timothy Deutsch, 32, of Frederick.

Clark, who was driving east in a 2004 Subaru Impreza, lost control shortly after 4 p.m. and crossed into the westbound lane, police said. The Subaru collided with Gaynor's 2004 Toyota Avalon head-on but slightly to the side. The Toyota was pushed over the guardrail and landed on its side. Gaynor was declared dead on the scene.

Clark was flown to R Adams Cowley Shock Trauma Center in Baltimore and was listed in serious condition Tuesday evening. Golden and Deutsch were flown to Suburban Hospital in Bethesda and were in good condition Tuesday afternoon.

Rescue crews closed the road to traffic for several hours after the crash Monday while a reconstruction team worked to determine the cause.

Police believe speed to be a factor in the crash, but the investigation is ongoing. While alcohol does not seem to be the cause of the accident, it will not be ruled out in the investigation, said Cpl. Jennifer Bailey of the Frederick County Sheriff's Office.

Clark, Golden and Deutsch worked at the Wild Goose Brewery, in Wedgewood Business Park in Frederick, said Neal Stewart, a company spokesman.

All three men had clocked out for the day, Stewart wrote in an e-mail.

Francis Gaynor, husband of Vivian Gaynor, began to choke up when he spoke about his wife on the phone Tuesday morning.

"She was a really caring and loving woman," he said.

Family members declined additional comment.

Neighbors spoke of her in the same way.

Elizabeth Machado has lived next door to the Gaynors for three years. Machado recalled the time her air conditioning system was being replaced. Crews were working in her house for the whole day and Vivian Gaynor invited her over so she had a place to stay.

if you look closely ....

the WRX crossed the center lane but passenger side has most impact...

AValon has most damage on the driverside from impact....

ALmost as if the WRX was almost going perpendicular to Avalon at moment of crash.

I'm not sure why people are wondering why the Avalon's cabin looks the way it is. The WRX was probably going at a much faster rate than the old lady's car when they collided. She ended up absorbing the impact.

I wouldn't be surprised if it happened because they tried to pass someone and ran out of room hitting the poor old lady in her Avalon. Still no way to tell for sure what happened exactly. sometimes things take place inside the car itself (ex. spilled coffee, dropped cigarette) that can cause accidents. to the lady in the Avalon. I've lost both parents in car accidents and it has made me a lot more cautious as a driver. I don't race ppl anymore, unless I'm very positive the road is clear and i shouldn't even be doing that (I admit it, so don't flame.)

I wonder if the insurance company will consider PDR for the avalon or the WRX?

RIP to the lady in the Avalon

Wow, Toyotas take impact like they are made of tin foil. Everytime I see one in a wreck it has way more damage than any of the other cars involved. Could be coincidental but I'm starting to wonder

Everyone note boy-racer blow off valve on engine in picture 3. Standard WRX's have an internal BOV. Everything bright blue on that engine is not stock. Yes those are Prodrive wheels.

So sad for the family of that innocent woman who was likely killed by someone who made yet another bad driving mistake.
