Hyundai: Sonata News

I recall a post a few pages back, where someone stated something like; 'it'll have a 4, and a 4'. With a wink at the end!
Correct me if I saw wrong, but I think it was from the guy I think who works for Hyundai.

The powertrain choices will be very interesting, too. Six is gone and six is in with a four.
I haven't had a chance to drive one yet, but I did check out the whole car from the engine bay to the trunk, from the bare chassis to the assembled interior, etc. I personally like the current generation Sonata but this one will be even better. Just a few more months and we will begin full production to crank them out. If you are going to be in the market for a mid-size/large-size family sedan, I really would recommend taking a look at it.

The thing that I dont' understand is that they have a V6. If they really think there's only gonna be 20k V6's sold, then just make 20k of them...it's not like they ahve to design it from scratch or anything.

What was said was that the 6 was out - meaning the V6, and the 6 was in on the I4, meaning a 6AT or 6 MT.

Just for clarification, that red car on the previous pages was an artist's rendering with no affiliation to Hyundai. To put it bluntly, it might as well be some teenager in the basement who is just talented with Photoshop. It was basically an overlay of the Genesis sedan's features onto a what-is-believed-to-be Sonata.
The white car, as released in Korea, is the correct one.

Remember how Audi said recently that the next S4 might be a 4-cyl turbo? If the high-end goes 4-cyl it's no wonder the mid-range is also going 4 cyl. These people might look around elsewhere, find nothing, and come back to Hyundai.

What it comes down to is people in the market for a Hyundai Sonata are looking for economically particle cars that are reliable and typically cost less than the Japanese or domestic offerings. Hyundai probably gambled that if the 4 offers good enough power, the current 6 owners will still stick with them because moving to another brand will cost more money.

Six is gone and six is in with a four.
V6 is gone and six-speed manual is in with an I4. GDI 2.4L I4 and 2.0T I4 later.

New Engine
When the swoopy new 2011 Sonata goes into production at Hyundai's plant in Alabama early next year, it won't offer a V6 engine anymore, but it will get the company's first ever direct-injected engine. This week in South Korea, Hyundai took the wraps off its 2.4-liter Theta II GDI four-cylinder. Like similar engines from other automakers, Hyundai's engineers have taken advantage of the charge cooling effect of direct injection by boosting the compression ratio to 11.3:1. As a result the engine produces 198 hp and 184 pound-feet of torque at 4,250 rpm in Korean spec.
The direct injection system is setup to use a two-pulse strategy similar to modern common rail diesels. The initial smaller pulse is ignited by the spark plug and then followed by a second larger pulse as the piston begins its downward stroke. GM uses a similar strategy for its 2.4-liter DI Ecotec because it helps warm the engine faster, heating the catalytic converter and reducing emissions. The GDI Theta II produces from 7-12 percent more torque across its rev range than the port-injected version of the same engine. Efficiency should also improve by about 10 percent although the final certification figures aren't complete yet. The Theta II also gets continuously variable valve timing on both camshafts to round out its high tech upgrades. In addition to the regular Sonata sedan, this engine will likely also be used for the new Sonata hybrid when it debuts late in 2010.

Nice that they went DI....but still about not having a V6 or a turbo 4.

Impressive torque from a 2.4.
Who would have thought the day would come that Honda lagged behind GM, Ford and Hyundai in the 4 cylinder engine department.

201 vs 198 bhp
170@4300 Auto is not bad vs 184@4300 (CVT).
I will rather have 250bhp (8000rpm) with broad torque cover DI Honda engine rather than small incremental improvement.

No V6 for the KDM models is what I've heard. Hyundai will not acknowledge or deny that the V6 has been axed from the North American offering. Owing to the fact that the 2010 Santa Fe is getting a freshened 3.5 liter Lambda V6 (up from 3.3) next year, I can't see the Sonata missing out on that, especially in a country where power is king.

It's funny, I'm still looking for clarification on the "Korean Spec" part of the press release. But even if those numbers are SAE, it's barely ahead of a TSX K24. Till we see a torque curve, it'll be hard to say if the peak number is more or less usable. So what this release is saying is that after years of development, and with the latest Direct Injection, Hyundai has managed to drop horsepower by 3, raise compression by .3:1 and gain 14 ft-lbs of torque. All against an engine that is 6-7 years old? Yeah, I guess that's really catching up.
