Oldsmobile Alero question

What would make the rpms jump in a 2001 Oldsmobile alero?

It might be a sensor of some kind, near or on the Throttle body.
It is true this isnt the best place to get that information, but we can all see that cars are similar enough to offer some if any advice.
You may look for something on the Throttle body (Where the plastic air pipe connects to the Metal Intake) You may end up replacing the Throttle body, but as we dont know much about your car and its quirks here you can try a Buick Forum like the Mods suggested.
Also your local parts shop can read your check engine light for you if it comes on.

My bet is the idle air control valve.
As Gabru678 mentioned, it is located on the throttle body.
The TL and CL have this same issue. Very easy to replace. Some people try clean it but for the price below I'd just get a new one.
