2005 TL automatic whining when accelerating

Hey Everyone,

Need some help. I'm an Assistant Service Manager at a Lexus dealer in Montreal. We got a 2005 TL with 144,000 kilometres (100,000 miles) as a trade in and I jumped on it. Clean, all maintenance done at Acura dealer, no major issues at all. Only thing I'm getting a whining noise when accelerating, mainly 1st and 2nd gear. Some of the mechanics I work with say its a tranny issue, others say it isn't. Gears change smooth, no delay or slipping. When I put it in neutral noise is gone. Noise is there as soon as I barely touch the pedal. Parts manager buddy of mine at Acura says may be the tranny, but I'm not too sure. Anyone else had this issue?

I have that issue too with my 03 TL. I have checked the bearing and it seems to be OK. Any other recommendations?

I had the whine and it turned out to be driver's side bearing took a crap. replaced it and no more whine. There is a TSB that indicates some differential noise is normal on these newer transmissions.

hopefully it is not a torque converter coming apart as that means new transmission

Hey man! I'm in Montreal too and my tranny definitely whines too. If you want to check mine out maybe we can compare both and see if it's the same kind of noise. I'm almost 100% sure it's my tranny doing that noise.

You think it can lead to tranny failure?

I'd have to hear it in person. I know a friend of mine compares it to a spaceship sound haha.

If your car is like mine then there's nothing to worry about.

It shouldn't. If you are worried, look into the 3rd and 4th transmission pressure switches. Apparently the failures we see on our trannies are related to those, I don't think heat is the biggest factor. It's not costly and you can even DIY replacing the switches, good preventive maintenance.

I haven't done the pressure switches. I DIY'ed the PS o-ring, go to luciani Acura on jean-talon near Decarie. They have the o-ring in stock at all times if I recall correctly. Plus Steve (the parts guy) is a pretty knowledgeable guy when it comes to those cars.

The o-ring replacement takes about 5-15 minutes to do, pretty simple DIY. Only thing is you have to make sure you get the old one out and it tends to stay inside when you take the hose out. I could explain it better to you in person cuz my memory is a bit fuzzy.
