Question Best muffler/exhaust for quiet highway cruising?

I've viewed a ton of videos and have read a lot of threads but can't seem to find anything for an exhaust system or muffler that still improves output, sounds awesome when you get on it, but is quite when cruising the highway, I'm clocked at 85 when cruising. Anyone know the best combo here? Xlr8, atlp, magnaflow, flowmasters...etc. thanks!

I have the 4G 3.7 with XLR8, clocked in at 85 you will hear the exhaust, i am very used to it, with music volume at 10 you can't hear it much at all. Hope this helps some.

there's probably no way to get around drone.
if you're worried about that; keep it stock.

sure you could stack resonator on top of resonator on top of resonator; but then you would be destroying and hacking up that expensive ass exhaust system that you just bought.

How about just a J-pipe? You'll get a deeper/louder tone from your stock mufflers, and I haven't heard of too many complaining about drone. I know there are 2 models for the 3.7, but I'm not sure if they fit the 6MT or not. You would need to double-check.

The comptech exhaust and tanabe exhaust for the 3G TL was great at what you want, quiet and nice until you punch it, and then it sounds wonderful. If you can buy the mufflers from either company and get some custom piping, you should be set! Look at their exhausts and you should be able to copy it over for a 4G TL.

I would say our XLR8 exhaust is definitely louder than stock, but it's pretty reasonable when your not heavy on the throttle. Our XLR8 exhaust also comes with a resonator which really helps reduce drone.

As Arpypat mentioned, the J-Pipe is a great power adder and won't produce any drone. It's also made here in the U.S. from U.S. grade stainless steel. We have our V2 J-Pipe available on our website for $475 not including shipping. You can place the order right from our website! We also have our round and oval tip exhausts listed for $1,149 not including shipping.

You could go as simple as swapping mufflers. I went with the Borlas, a lot of people do Magnaflows. Obviously you wont get (any) performance gains or as loud as a cat-back system. But it definitely improves the sound with no drone at highway speeds, and its fairly cheap.

Whatever exhaust you get just weld up a big long muffler/resonator. I used a round 6" wide and 36" long magnaflow muffler in middle muffler/resonator spot.

No drone on highway.

My tanabe exhaust I had on prior to custom droned some though.

I have a TL Fwd, I have magnaflow 11225, resonator and 3rd muffler delete as well, jpipe on it as well... Drone is stupid. Just saying.

i just got the magna flows and they sound good never over bearing and in 6th gear anything over 70mph you won't hear it at all really while crusing

if you are like very low rpm u will get a little drone but its honestly not to the point to where its annoying or over bearing if you have the radio on you prob wont even notice it.

Any exhaust that's available today that is quiet for highway cruising? Just the axle back muffler. Been seeing good reviews of Borla 40357 or a Magnaflow (???), but can't see much about highway drone since I spend most of my time on the highway 70mph+

Seems the Magnaflow 11225 between the two for cruising purposes. Any long term updates from anyone that has?

I have those magnaflows along with jpipe and hfpc and honestly it's super quiet at 6th gear highway speeds. Like literally no drone and you only really hear anything out of the ordinary when accelerating. It truly needs mid to high rpm to really rip. I think the borla is supposed to be louder. Also throw borla atak in the mix they are possibly even louder.

Magnaflows might be the way to go if you want a little more noise but still no drone. I would say the magnaflows are not loud at all, unless going past 4k rpm. It's loud past that but obviously you can do 100 percent of your daily driving without going close to even 4k rpm. Still I suspect borlas are even louder. My review is also based on having jpipe and hfpc before the mufflers. That probably is why it's so loud over 4k rpm.

Basically the magnaflows are pretty tame. I would worry about them not being loud enough. But that is the trade off for such little drone.

Thank you for your detailed response. However, I am still on the fence about the exhaust unfortunately. What I can't decide between is Magnaflow, Borla or Stock.
Here's the situation, I prefer a quiet ride and like to hear the engine roar over a fart can. My driver's side muffler sprung a leak and I want to repair or "upgrade".
The magnaflow seems to sound almost like an exhaust leak to me but that could be my speakers?
The Borla sounds nice and bassy/well rounded but seems it may be louder than I want during cruising.
Stock on the 4G is very quiet, too quiet. I'm only mentioning stock because my 3G Type S is stock but it's old so it has a nice sound of it's own. When I blip the gas to engage first gear, I can hear a slight growl from the Type S stock where as I can still hear the fuel injectors on the 4G and why I want a little more deep tone (without sounding like a fart or leak)

I think the magnaflows are what you are looking for. They definitely should not sound like an exhaust leak lol.

With stock piping and stock cats, I would suggest Vibrant mufflers. Best stainless steel i have seen, will not rust. Packing is with stainless steel wool, so it will not change its tone. It is deep sounding muffler.

Do you know the part number of the vibrant muffler?
I'm seeing mostly resonators when searching.

I am in the process of making the same decisions. I want to get the Vibrant resonators for sure. Was unsure of what muffler to go with. Is there any way the Vibrant 1040 would fit?

I ended up going with the Borla 40357's as I like the bassy note of them better once I heard it on my home theatre.
And looking to source the tips from the same place you all are getting from on eBay, just having trouble with the seller confirming the gap length between the tips. I may have to go to the exhaust shop and ask for their advice if they can fabricate one
