Exhaust Modifcation
I'm looking to add a little extra rumble to my exhaust, nothing major just a little more of a sporty tone. I'm not interested in changing the exhaust tips and would prefer something that bolts on so I can install it myself. I'm not interested in adding a sulphur smell and I don't want any issues with codes. Does anyone have any suggestions? Is a longtube j-pipe with 3rd cat removal my best move? Will that cause me to throw a code?

if all you want is a little more sporty sound, head to an exhaust shop and ask them to cut out the mid-muffler and add(weld) a straight pipe. can be done for $60 or less.
the jpipe is geared for power increase with a side effect of sound. but at the cost of ~$400-ish. (dont know how much they cost, just estimating)
so, for your specific goal, a jpipe isnt what you want.

then, it sounds like the jpipe is for you!
(just trying to get to the bottom of what you really want)
and you can do it yourself!
When I added my jpipe to my stock car, at idle...it was a little deeper in tone...but sounded like the car came like that from the factory...if I didnt tell any one, they would think its stock....
and only when you rev past 4K and get into vtec is when the pipe really really growls, akin to an intake induction noise at 4k and beyond

Any idea if you lose any low-end tq or hp from installing it? I'm mostly a city driver but have a nice curvy section of road I like to have fun on every once in a while.

you dont actually lose low end tq. you gain!
it actually shifts the power band up!
but again, Honda's J-series engine has always had this characteristic of being high strung and making the most power at 6-7k RPM.
in other words; the butt dyno will not feel an increase at lower RPMs, but hold on for VTEC!
(the only thing I did notice at lower RPMs, is the pedal position. with the jpipe, its more effiecient and you dont have to press the pedal as far. )

As Justnspace mentioned, you will gain low end torque. A replacement J-Pipe is the way to go if you're looking for a little more sound and a bump in power! The larger diameter piping combined with removing the third cat adds up to some great power gains.
