Just bought my '07 TL and drivers side started that popping. The write up was great and the pictures were awesome. Every issue I have had with car( not that much) all has been addressed by this forum. You guys are saints. Thank you.

How exactly does this cause the mirror to click?

I took mine apart and lubed it all up wit the Shin Etsu grease and the passenger one works flawless, the drivers side works much better now but it kinda stutters and goes back and forth. It does however work a whole lot better though.

I used some molykote I had...same thing...passenger side went back to smooth and perfect right away...driver side for some reason won't drop ALL the way down when I reverse...but I DID notice that now, over time it's gotten better...yesterday it did end up going all the way down.

Thanks again for this thread!

Does anyone know if the actuator is available for the '06 TL mirrors. I changed the actuator in my wife's 2010 Honda Pilot mirror assembly for ~$40 instead of $250 for the entire assembly and save big money. The housing is also cheap at around $35 but doesn't appears it is a TL option. Just wanted to confirm this.

Thanks,

Nevermind, the actuator is available but the housing does not appear to be purchase separately.

I just did this to both mirrors. The noise is completely gone, HOWEVER, I'm experiencing all kinds of other problems just since I did this! First of all, my memory seats/mirrors do not work whatsoever now. Neither the remote nor the buttons inside the car work. Also, when I put the car into reverse, my driver mirror just turns all the way towards the car until it starts clicking because it can't go any further. AND, all my window buttons are illuminated at all times now. Even when the lights are completely off. None of these things were happening before I did this "fix". I made absolutely sure that I plugged the wires back into the same spots. What went wrong?

I plan to get a new mirror altogether for my drivers side. $50 bucks.

Its slightly loose for some reason, so when I'm on the freeway and wind flows through it creaks. And its developing that ugly burnt on the bottom edge so just another reason to get a new one in.

Passenger side on is fine and no rust/burnt look so this will help me get rid of that annoying creak.

It doesnt develope the burn marks on its own, if the burn marks have increased it means you're leaving your heated mirror feature on for too long.

I just did this to my mirror and it works great now but does anybody know if i can get a new mirror at the dealer? Im talking about the mirror part itself not the whole assembly because the mirror has a lot of the brown burnt marks on it. Im wondering if they actually sell that seperate because i know they sell the whole mirror but mine works fine just would like to get a new glass for it.

I would be SHOCKED if they sold the mirror alone...auto parts store have generic replacement glass...I'm sure one would fit but I'd personally rather have the oem with brown spots.

I purchased new glass portions of the mirror, OEM. They do sell them. $35/side I believe.

Well since I live in Southern California, I have only used my mirror twice in the last 2 1/2 years of owning it, and its usually in the morning where condensation has formed. I only turn it on when at least more than half of the condensation disappears than turn it off.

I am not buying through auto parts store, its through my dealer. And they do sell the mirror glass individually but for $48 total.

Yes, but my dealers quote me $40 but with tax ($48).

Thanks for this!!

Both my mirrors are now doing this. It's really only annoying when they tilt for reverse, but I will surely use this guide to fix it, thanks again!

I would never replace the OEM mirror with an aftermarket so if i cant buy the glass OEM then i dont want it.

I know you meant the heater element, but I've driven in SoCal, so that statement made me laugh.

damnit autocorrect/grammar, meant to type "heated" mirror...

The mirror sub assy is ~$38 at Delray. And it appears that the actuators may have been discontinued! So keep yours greased up!

Hmmm. That's water based. So while great for the butt I'd stick with something petroleum based for your mirrors.

Great DIY. Right mirror will need lubed before the winter, but I also have the mirror browning/tarnishing issue and will need to replace both sides soon.

Don't forget that you can also buy a set of convex mirrors as replacements.

Thanks OP. For the longest I thought probably the actuator on the driver side mirror was going. Simple process. Once I saw how to get the mirror off, I was able to do the passenger side mirror in half the time.
Took my time cleaning out the old grease and applying white lithium grease. Mirrors operate smoothly now.
Even if the car was under warranty, I wouldn't have the dealership do it. I doubt if those chimpanzees would take their time to do what I did.

Smooth operation....

Thanks for the detail instruction Op! Both mirrors has been stuttering for awhile. Had some time today and decided to tackle them. I took off the driver side mirror first. I was very careful removing the mirror, but it still only took me about 15 minutes. The passenger side took less than 5 minutes to get the job done.

Just performed this DIY on my driver's side and will later do the passenger side because I didnt have time.

My driver side mirror moves smoothly and no more click. And I replaced the whole mirror glass completely since I had two issues with the glass wiggling and the burnt appearance.

New glass came in and I was good to go. I used Marine Grease with water resistant since White Lithium Grease was not available in tube form at my local Autozone or O'Reillys.

Now I have an issue with a squeaky noise from my window, like a rub sound between glass and rubber. hmmm...

I just bought my '05 about a week ago....just before a very cold few days. My mirrors seemed to be sticking. The seemed to be doing a little better now that it's warmed up a bit. But I still felt it a good idea to go ahead and clean and lube them. So, after waiting for a warmer day, I took the plunge and popped my mirrors off to lube the mech. I gotta say, it was nerve wracking. I used two layers of painter's tape on the painted edge of the mirror housing to protect the paint and with considerable force, popped the mirrors out as described above. The yellow lube that was there did not seem that bad. It was very slick and smooth and not gummy as I expected. But I still cleaned them and used white lithium grease. When reassembled, that indeed worked much better. No regrets.

Great thread and thanks for the pictures. I did the mirror replacement this morning and it went great. I would take this a step further and open up the black box with the electric motors inside and reapply some new electric grease within. The mirrors move much smoother now and seem to exert less effort to move the mirrors.

Since this got bumped up today, I decided to try and fix my mirror issue. I found the grease easily ($3.99 at Advance Auto Parts), and the whole process was actually pretty easy. It took me forever to do the driver's side since I didn't know what I was doing (probably an hour), but I think I did the passenger's side in 10 minutes. The hardest part was figuring out where to shove the flathead and twist. The second hardest part was putting the mirror back on. But once I realized what the technique was to put it back on, the other mirror was on in seconds. No need to disconnect the wires. It feels great achieving buttery smooth movement without paying Acura hundreds of dollars to do it.

A bit of info I might add to the OP: the screw that holds the spring and center cap in place is a #15 Torx, not #20 (at least on the 07/08 mirrors)

Wow how did I miss this?! My passenger side mirror is the most annoying thing about the car, it clicks and almost always tilts inwards too much so I adjust it almost every time I shift to park, my driver side is fine. I think I'm gonna go home and glob some Shin-Etsu in there.

Anyone have any problems after taking apart the mirror and motor? I cleaned up the old grease from the motor and put in a dab of the lithium grease. Cleaned up everything else, added new grease, installed everything back the way it should be and now it seems that their are a few gremlins inside both of my side view mirrors. Both have will go up, down, left and right without the mirror on but as soon as the mirror is back on; the drivers side will tilt down in reserve but will have a hard time going back up (you can hear the motor running but it won't go up) while the passengers up and down tilt is almost non existent.

Just did this fix now, only took about 10 minutes to do both sides. I didn't think my drivers side was bad until I fixed the passengers side... yup a finger tip full of Shin-Etsu for each mirror did the trick. No clicking anymore and the auto tilt on reverse is now smooth, they move much quicker too. I just tilted them all the way in, and stuck my hand in there and they popped right off, just pushed them back on firmly with my palm no cracks. The only correction that I didn't see anyone mention from the OP, it says it's a #20 screw, it's actually a T-10. But yeah I wish I could hit the thanks button twice.

Just did this today and it fixed the clicking. The only issue is that the mirror (when reversing) does little adjustment-like movements and the same when it returns back to the setting I had it at. The angles are correct though. I just thought it odd that it takes some little "course corrections"...luckily it doesn't take a long time to adjust. Great posts on here. Good job to the posters who added pictures.

My mirrors have been clicking and sticking ever since I bought the car last year. I figured the actuators needed to be replaced, but I found this thread and after following the instructions my mirrors work perfectly now! Thanks to OP for posting this!
