Power steering pump replacement cost

Power steering pump replacement cost
Hi All,
I've 08 RDX Tech with 88k miles. I was having an intermittent whining noise coming from the engine. I drove it to my local shop when it was making the noise and they narrowed it down to the power steering pump. They said the alternator was fine which I thought could be the problem. They wanted $800 for a replacement. I ended up going to my dealer as they offered a loaner car. The dealer cost for a new power steering pump was $700 but they said I need to replace the power steering hose as well for $500. I questioned the cost of the hose and they said it's half labor and half the part. Anyone else get these prices when replacing the pump and hose? Thank you.

Wow, that seems steep. Does your high pressure power steering line have a leak in it? If so, did it cause the power steering pump cavitation and death? If its just the power steering pump, they can be had for a for around ~$100. Replacement is easy, just need to relieve tension on the serpentine belt and remove 2/3 bolts. The high pressure PS line, is a little more involved but still doable, haven't heard of one of those failing though.

Thanks for the response. The only advance warning of this was at 79k when my local shop noted the power steering pump was seeping. I'm not sure if that was related to the hose or the pump. If the hose rarely fails, it makes me wonder if it's a legitimate repair. I'm not too handy so I really have no choice. And at almost 90k, my RDX has been mostly trouble free.

I would start by looking to see if the ps pump and or line is leaking with your own eyes.
If you can't tell if it is leaking- post a couple of pics of the pump and lines so we can see what's up.
If there are no leaks, change the ps fluid. Use a mity vac or a turkey baster to remove as much of the old ps fluid as possible and replace it with new Honda ps fluid.
Drive it for a week and repeat the above fluid change.
If it is leaking- I think there is a ps fluid that is made to stop leaks. It may be worth a try.

Here are pics from Bernardi Acura of the parts related to your problem. They should give you some idea where any leaks may occur. There are spots on the hi pressure pipe to hose crimp fittings that can start to seep as the hose get old and hard.
