It'd be nice if the zdx was a real coupe

quick photoshop reveals it was true in concept, failed in design by the addition of a second set of doors. I like it a lot better as a real coupe

There would be even fewer people who would buy a 2-door ZDX than a 4-door

Meh, I can barely even see the rear doors as it is. And those doors are would be too damn long for my liking. I can't imagine getting out of my car in a parking spot.

Nice PS, though.

I posted this in the CL forum hoping to garner support from coupe drivers/enthusiasts. You guys obviously don't understand what driving a coupe is like. Besides those rear doors are pointless.

I think they should make a model of the TSX a coupe, since it is in-line with the Accord. When I saw the wagon at the New York Auto Show, I asked the girl why they didn't make a coupe again like the CL and she answered "We don't find it very practical right now. We think people want something that can be hauler while still having good fuel economy."

Actually, I don't agree that the extra doors are useless... my family always goes to dinner or shopping in my car and they get in easy enough... granted it's a tight squeeze to put my brother, sister and mom back there since my brother and sister are broad shouldered. But 2 people fit back there just fine... my brother is 5'10" and my sister is 5'7".

And as far as the look, many folks have thought it was a 2-door coupe... the designers did a good job of disguising the rear door handles. My neighbors and other folks in various parking lots have asked if it was hard to get into the back seats when the front seats are folded, not realizing there are doors back there.

All in all, I think that as long as you warn people to mind their head entering, it's very workable.

+1 on everything

I had a few people ask me how to get to the back not realizing there are handles, and those 2 doors, no matter how small they are - do help with getting in and out of the car.

Interestingly, there are many cultures around the world where it is considered rude to ask somebody to enter the rear of a car when there is no door. In those countries, you will find very few 2 door cars. Basic rule is, if it has 4 seats then it should have 4 doors. (Maybe those countries have a prevelance of women who wear skirts!)

It depends on how it is priced. However, i think it would compete directly with the audi A5/S5, which sells around 1000-1500 per month. I'm sure acura could at least match that. Which would triple ZDX sales.

as a coupe (or hatch?), it would be significantly lighter (try 400-500lb lighter) with slightly less room (mostly in the rear seating area) but with significantly better handling, power, and FE.

Scratch that. Acura, just bring back the CL!

On what do you base the claims that the ZDX platform could achieve these results simply by removing the rear doors?

FWIW, I agree with you that Acura needs a CL back in the lineup. Maybe I'm biased because I used to own a CL, but I think it fills a market need that may not bring tons of sales but that does at least bring another demographic into the dealership. For my wife and I, we started with an Integra then stepped up to a CL; now we drive an RDX and are planning to pick up a ZDX in two months. Without those sporty coupes in the lineup, we never would have started with Acura in the first place!

I wasn't trying to get technical.

All i'm saying is, a coupe should be closer in size and weight to a TL or TSX (probably even lighter), rather than being closer to a 4400lb SUV.

Obviously Acura doesn't understand, not us.

It all depends on the purpose of the coupe. The ZDX, if it came in 2-door form, would be a touring coupe, not a performance coupe. It's kind of like the the Lexus SC430--some people complain about its heavy weight and lack of sportiness, without realizing that it is meant to be a luxury cruiser. Now Lexus has added the IS convertible and, of course, the LF-A.

Back in the day, the Integra (particularly in GS-R and Type-R forms) was the sporty coupe and the CL was tending more towards luxury and comfort. It was no slouch, but the designers' focus was on quality and features over weight savings and track numbers.

I think the ZDX is great just the way it is, but also agree that Acura really should have a more performance-oriented 2-door in the lineup. After all, Acura started out as the "luxury and performance division of the American Honda Motor Company"--their cars aren't the most luxurious on the market but at least they hold their own. But they seem to have given up almost entirely on performance.

It is amazing to me how many people have no idea that the ZDX isn't a 2 door.

Personally I like the look of the regular ZDX to this photoshop. The doors look WAY too long in porportion to the car.

And I drove a coupe for two years and the only difference between that and a sedan is that it's a bigger pain in the ass trying to get people in the back seats in a coupe. That's why I got rid of my CL-S for my current TL.

I was on my way home Tuesday and a black ZDX pulled up beside me, man it looks so freaking clean. Wish I can afford one man.
