Burning Brakes
I think the problem here was in Acura setting unrealistic sales expectations. I, too, like the looks of the ZDX but recognize that it is polarizing. It is also fairly impractical--the exterior size of an MDX with a smaller interior than an RDX--which limits its appeal.
I wish Acura marketing would start underselling and then letting the vehicles over-deliver. For instance, they could have predicted sales of merely 1,000 units the first year with a press release along the lines of, "We recognize that we are launching a special car in an uncertain economy. In addition, the ZDX is a niche vehicle aimed at a discerning demographic. We know that they will be pleased with the vehicle, but recognize that it is not for everyone."
With that theme in place, 3,000 annual sales would look like a huge, unprecedented crush of demand! Acura could still maintain internal sales expectations that are different from the ones they publish (for all I know they could do this anyway), but it seems like with every press release they blow more and more hot air such that now the public and the automotive press don't even really pay attention to all the hyperbole. But I think anyone with half a brain could have predicted the ZDX wasn't going to move 6,000 units...
