Windshield pitted

A piece of mortar (roughly 1" by 1/2") landed on my windshield on the lower left hand side and created a bunch of small pits (almost looks like someone poked the windshield with a needle many times) all within a 1/4" diameter spot. The windshield did not crack and there is no chunk of glass missing. It just feels like a rough spot when I glide my finger across the bruised area.

What would be the best way to smooth it out or should I leave it alone?

I do not know of anything that can help you in this situation. I would leave it alone or replace he windshield

If you can feel the scratch/pit with your fingernail, nothing will take it out. Either replace it or live with it. If it doesn't obscure your vision, I wouldn't worry about it.

Would one of those OTC windshield repair kits work or how about a glass polish?

no, I've used them to get rid of etching, like from bad wiper marks, but they won't remove anything you can feel with your fingernail.

I had a minor scratch on my windshield that I could feel with my finger nail- about 4 inches long and looked like the wipers did it. I tried a little Bar Keeper's Friend (liquid) and it took out the scratch! It took about 3 minutes of rubbing the length of the scratch but it came out- I was pretty surprised.

This might work for you but there's no guarantee, but when I had a little knick from a rock on my windshield, I had these laying around and it made the "chip" disappear

The reason why I said no guarantee is because I had another windshield chip and used this again and it didn't work, but it did made the chip look smaller and less noticeable.
