Tar/grease/oil/silicone in carpet?

So I get in my girl's 4runner yesterday and a few miles down the road, I notice my shoe is sticking to her carpet. I look down and there is some sort of black goo in the floor, that I have now rubbed in some with my feet now. It appears that it was there before, but she claims it was clean.

Regardless, I am left with the task of cleaning it up (and my shoes). I used some Simple Green and a brush that got most of it out, but there are two spots where the goo has dried (again, makes me think it was there before) that I cannot get out.

What can I use that is stronger to break this stuff up? Should I soak it in something? Pulling the goo results in the carpet fibers coming out...so that doesn't work...

Any help would be much appreciated, thanks!

Update: it is some kind of tar, found it in my apartment building's parking lot. I stepped in it while carrying something heavy and felt it squish, so I looked down and noticed that these black patches have melted. I noticed where other people had also stepped in it and tracked it around, probably unknowingly. I complained to the management and all the mainainence guys are out there trying to figure out how to get it up.

So what can get tar out of carpet and shoe soles?

Goo

It's a coincidence that you use the word "goo" in your question. I use a product called Goo Gone that removes tar, etc. from mats. An added plus is the odor; it's a pleasant orange smell. I know it's available at Home Depot.

I have a ton of Goo Gone, and another similar product that is a citrus based product that is stronger. I didn't remember either of them mentioning tar but that makes sense. I'll def try it, thanks!

for the bottom of your shoe, try gasoline on a rag and rub, don;t do this on the mats, it might bleach them
