Hand wash FTW. Foam & 2-bucket method to reduce the possibility of swirling. Use a car wash if you want your paint to come out badly swirled and marred, but I'll stick to hand washing as it is least likely to damage the paint (unless you drop your mitt on the ground and reuse it or something dumb like that).

So true. Before I lost my TL, which wasn't in that bad a shape but could use some work, I vowed never to go to a car wash again & stick with ONR. I stayed true that.
BUT, now that the car I bought is in a lot worse condition than the TL (paint-wise), I gave in. I say to myself, "it's already bad, I'm gonna do a full detail soon", and I know you guys say, "why make it worse"...but it's just so easy to go to the car wash & get an okay job. I at least still dry with my own MFs and do more of a "blot" than a "wipe".
It's almost like, why would you go to the extreme for a rusted out Pinto? Though an exaggeration, it's how I feel.

Touchless auto carwash for the quickie clean, true hand wash (minus the silly squeegee thingy) for the heavy cleans. I use a synthetic chamois to dry the body, and a separate one for the jambs.
Id NEVER put my car through one of those spinning car washes. Imagine some joker tieing bolts to those spinning rags/brushes. Prob. no different.
And NEVER pay kids to do it (or anyone else for that matter).

Thats a great video. I'll post some pics of a Nissan GTR black that had nothing but "Hand Washes" at a detail shop. Its not pretty folks! I told the owner what to look for and he reported back to his horror as he watched the guy wash his wheels and all that brake dust and then go right to the hood . I'll prob post the detail this weekend.
