Selecting Panels for Testing products
Those of you who use PC or Rotary, do you have a favorite section that you use for testing before you identify the proper combination for job. Does any panel have a benefit over the others in being the guinea pig. When you are checking, do you tape off multiple sections of the panel to see the difference between each combo, or do you just hit the same section with different combo until you get the desired result.
Especially for those without a PTG, I would think it would be safer to test the vertical sections (doors or fenders) than horizontal ones (hood or trunck) as horizontal ones typicall would have more need for correction, which is not needed on the vertical ones.

most detailers use the hood since most of the damage is usually on there because it's so large. As well they tape of a 1x1 area and try 1 product/pad combo and see what it does. From there they can see if they need to use a much more aggressive compound/lighter compound or need to use a aggressive/less aggressive pad. This can be figured out by seeing how much hologramming is now induced, how many of the swirls/scratches are removed, etc.

If you need most correction on the hood, then shouldn't you try to find something that works on other areas and then see if it fixes the heavier defects on the hood in multiple passes. If it doesn't then move up to next aggresive pad or polish.

To answer your question I have done both. I will sometimes tape off 2 or 3 spots trying 106fa, SIP, and M105 if the other 2 did not remove the defects or if I have a new polish I want to test out I will sometimes compare it with the above polishes. At this point I have a pretty good idea of which pad and polish combo's I will need just looking at the paint which comes with experience.
At other times I know which polishes I am going to use so I start out with 106 or SIP, see that it was not aggressive enough and bump up to a compound and polish right over the SIP check the results. Either way will work
