Cleaning the inner portion of the RIM...

Hey guys,

I need some advice on cleaning the inner portion of my factory OEM rims. I have a 2007 Acura TSX, and a 2007 Hyundai Santa Fe Limited AWD - this stuff will work fine on those rims, right?

Also, I live in a condo with water restrictions, so I don't have access to a hose readily, so what I've been doing is using a 1-gallon sprayer(purchased from Patrick at Excel detail) to rinse the cleaner off the rims.

So, I was originally using Megs APC (Green stuff diluted 10:1) to clean the rims, and while it did ok, it wasn't great. I even used an EZ-spoke brush to get in between the spokes and into the inner part of the wheel. Well, it loosened some of the dirt/grime/tar, but not all of it. They still don't look "clean."

Here's my question: Will the Megs ALL Wheel cleaner (that I have a little bit left of) remove all of this stuff? I have some Stoner's Tarminator as well, would that be more effective? Is there a product for removing this grime and pieces of tar that have stuck to the inside of the rim?

Lastly, will my sprayer work ok to remove the ALL Wheel cleaner, or will I need to go to the local coin OP to pressure wash the rims? I guess my question is, will the ALL Wheel cleaner harm the rims if it wasn't rinsed off good enough - although, I didn't have any issues with the APC green stuff.

Thanks much!

Jeff

The Meg's APC, when diluted 10:1, isn't very strong for wheel cleaning at all. However, I believe Meg's All Wheel Cleaner would be stronger. You can try the Tarminator and see if that does anything but from reading other detailers' experience with Tarminator, they claim that you have to use a lot of the product for it to do its job.

If you want to take the next aggressive step up to wheel cleaning, you can purchase some P21S Wheel Cleaner Gel (pretty pricey) or go the cheaper route by purchasing Meg's Wheel Brightener. I do have to warn you though that the Meg's WB is pretty potent stuff even at the recommended dilution but it's pretty much a detailer's last resort for the majority of us and really gets the job done.

Hey Denzil,

Thanks for the response! I think I'm going to give the Megs All Wheel Cleaner a try, and if that doesn't work, then I will order some P21 Wheel Gel Cleaner.

Yeah, no problem. What's really nice about that P21S Wheel Gel is that you don't have to worry about it damaging your wheels. You can really let it dwell on your wheels for as long as you like and not have to worry about a thing. This is some really great stuff but it can cost a pretty penny.

Question along the same lines so I'll throw it in this thread.

My wheels are painted black (from factory) with a polished metal lip. Are there any wheel cleaners I need to watch out for that would damage the paint?

Most OTC products are generally pretty safe for all wheels but you should always read the back label to confirm.
