Cheapo noob needs some help with exterior detail

Alright, I'm cheap (so think cheap), and I'm trying to do a half-decent job with detailing the exterior of a car.

From what I understand, here are the steps:

Wash
Clay
Chemically Clean (Polish?)
Protect/Wax
Wax Again?

I'm too cheap to use clay, but here's what I plan to do:

Wash- Dawn/Simple Green
Polish- Turtle Wax Scratch and Swirl Remover, paste, 10.5oz, $3.29
Wax- Turtle Wax Super Hard Shell, 14oz, paste, $4.29
Pads- Meguiar's High-Tech Applicator Pads, $1.99
Rags- 10-pk (?) of Microfiber Cloths from Sam's Club for < $10.

If I waxed every two months, and use the polish as well a few times a year, should I be good to go?

This is when I get the new car (Civic or tC), with either white or silver paint.

TIA.

Michael, spend a couple extra bucks and get some Duragloss products available at Car Quest. With some decent products, you'll get better durability and longevity. Wax application will be about 10-12 weeks and polishing will be semi-annual. I would highly suggest using a claybar, the difference will be night and day. Shoot me a PM when you're ready to do it. Be more than happy to assist.
