The Definitive Intake Resonator and K&N Air Filter Guide + Pics/Vids
 

To clear the inquries & confusion with the intake resonator and the popular K&N air filter, I've decided to write up a little guide for those who are new or doesn't know what they are all about. I hope this is helpful (and sticky worthy? :D)

Resonator Removal

While some say the bumper does not necessarily have to be removed for this task, I recommend removing it anyway (especially for non Type-S owners, as the resonator on Type-S' seem to be smaller and thus easier to remove simply from the bottom of the car). Plus it doesn't take that much longer to do this "extra" step.

When I removed mine, I went with the bumper removal route.

K&N filter replacement

While it has been said that it gives a slight boost in MPG (~1-2 mpg tops), but I have yet see this gain. However some members have reported gains so for the sake of argument, let's just say it does, even if it's minimal. The best way to save gas is to take it easy on the pedal. ;)

The good thing about the K&N is that you will not need to replace the filter ever again, since only a routine cleaning (every ~3000 to 5000 miles) is needed to renew its efficieny. So in the long run, you save $ by going with the K&N.

Not to mention the engine growl at higher rpm's and especially in the VTEC range has a deeper tone compared to the stock filter (Video clips available towards the end of the guide).

The product # for Non-Type-S (both TL and CL) is 33-2133, and and 33-2178 for Type-S.

You can buy it at your local auto store but as usual online is cheaper by almost $10. It's up to you.
Personally I bought from LTB motorsport (http://shop.store.yahoo.com/ltbmotor...acknairfi.html)... great prices and filter came pretty quickly.

Now for the installation.

Pop your hood and locate the stock airbox.
As you can see from the picture below, unscrew the 4 screws (they can be a pain to remove at first, so don't freak out) and lift up the lid from the side towards the front of the car to take out the stock/oem filter. I have heard from others that you can disconnect the intake hose from the airbox cover but it isn't really necessary. The plastic is mallable enough for the air filter swap.

Now take the K&N filter and be sure to match up the holes in the airbox so the cover can close without leaking air.

Now get those 4 screws back on and you are set! :D

^ Notice the shhhh sound as I turn off the engine. It's normal. Air is being released as the engine shuts down... it's similar what you would hear if you have a cold air intake.

i have a question.....i removed the resonator and the car makes this "roooooooooooooom" sound at idle, sort of like a drone sound, it's so pronouced, is it normal?
