Thumbs up Detroit Wheel and Tire

Hey guys, I just wanted to take a moment to throw out a plug for Detroit Wheel and Tire, and my sales rep Brett Markham.

https://detroitwheelandtire.com/
BMarkham@detroitwheelandtire.com

From day one it was a fantastic experience to deal with Brett, and he went out of his way to make sure I was getting exactly what I wanted, even taking different wheels with different finishes into different lighting and texting them to me. For a particular person like myself, this made all the difference, and when I got the wheels, wow, the finish just blew me away.

I haven't taken a lot of pictures at this point, but I'll include the few I have in this post, and add more later.

And what they look like on the car.

For reference, this was the previous finish on the wheels, which was a simple silver, and a bit too bright for my taste. Changing to the Hyper Silver has made all the difference in the look of the car IMO.

The finish looks quite different depending on the light and angle.

Compared to the old finish.

Both fantastic. There was a week delay while they were trying to get the paint codes from the stock Acura Enkei satin finish wheel, but after we figured out that we couldn't do that, and selected another finish (nearly identical), then it was pretty quick. I made the shipping a bit hard because I have a UPS account and shipped it on my shipper number there and back to save money, but their part was great. They also shipped the wheels back in bigger, much better packaged boxes to make sure that even if they were thrown around there would be no damaging them.

I'm telling you, I'm a super particular person and they impressed me, which is a damn hard thing to do!

Yeah, that's how I found them, searching for PVD Black Chrome. I'm having them do the Exige wheels in that finish, it's awesome.

Years ago I spoke with the owner when I wanted the Acura TL wheels chromed, along with the PVD. I was you might say a test as he thought they might be in the running to supply new cars with wheels with the PVD coating, but the problem I found, was that when the coatings were applied there wasn't any precaution taken to keep the hub bore clean. Consequentially the Acura wheels had uneven coating in the hub bore and trying to balance them with the cone was a nightmare as in the 70-80 mph range there was always a very slight vibration. Balance then turn the wheel and the balance was slightly off. Long story short, I had to use the adapter that bolts through the lug holes to balance the wheels.

The coating is remarkable as water will rinse any brake dust, dirt, etc off.

Interesting. They seemed very willing to do whatever, so I'd just email Brett about it, if you're still interested. I know they didn't mask off my inside hub section, so I had to beat my hub rings in with a hammer, but I didn't see it as an issue. However, it very well may be with the PVD, as you said, so I'm sure they could do something about that.

The wheels were purchased back in '08, a long time ago. The owner asked for my feedback and when I gave him the negatives he stated that I was picky, but it was said in a nice way. I have a Snap-on balancer so whenever the tires need to be done, I just use the adapter and not the cone on the TL.

The wheels still look like new, never needed polishing or cleaning with anything other than a large paint brush. PVD is the best.

You know, that's interesting, I have heard some bad things about PVD, like the finish is super thin, and not suited to automotive applications, and prone to cracking and such. But these were probably issues of old, even manufacturers use PVD now.

Got to remember the PVD process is the thin chrome layer only, but then topped with clear powder coating and that's why they are so impervious to the elements and the powder coating should not present any problems.

Haha, yes, and no. The Miro's are my Summer set, and since it was getting warm I put them on. Then 2 days later (I'm in Missouri, where if you don't like the weather, just wait a minute) the forecast was calling for snow, so I put my Winter set back on. It did in fact snow, so I just opened up the garage and laid one wheel on it to see how the finish looked surrounded by white and gray. But being something of a photographer, I figured I'd go ahead and snap some pix while I was at it .

I've had a couple people ask me about how well the Miro center caps match the new finish, so I took a pic. They don't match perfectly, but close enough that most would not even notice.

Yup, I debated on them for a while, but now that they're on, I can't see the car any other way. My only problem with them is that I want the rear garnish to be the exact same color, which I suppose is impossible.
