Zero Tolerance Policy

Over the past few weeks, admin and the mods have received enough bad post reports, seen the unnecessary hazing and rude comments towards new and old members, passive aggressive posts and the general decline of the pleasant atmosphere that 3GTL once had.

Steven Bell- one of our Administrators - has been more than forgiving to a handful of you. He's warned and warned and warned. This is not about censorship or taking the fun out of posting. It's about following the rules. If you can't follow them, you will be banned without warning.

So what if there has been an oil thread everyday. Ya, I AGREE it's annoying. However, if it annoys you that much- leave the thread and don't post. Same goes for what gas to put in, what color should I blah blah blah and the like.

I'll leave this thread open for discussion.

I can agree with you. Not everybody who joins this forum is computer savvy and may not actually know how to use this site to its full potential, so they will in turn start a lot of new threads. Never been a big deal to me, I'm here to learn and help like most members. Also a lot of people don't know much about thier car and need a helping hand to guide them along in there maintenance and aftermarket car experience, again never bothered me. Its refreshing to see you taking initiative to clean up some of the bashing and hazing. This site has been VERY responsible and dependable out of every forum i am a member of. Props to to admins and mods. Great site and will be a life long member

I'm assuming light jokes used with red text will be allowed but jokes that cross the line, even if red texted, will lead to a ding dong bannu?

Guys, ggesq and I have had A LOT of discussions about this topic lately. I appreciate him posting this thread and agree with him 100%.

When I bought my Type S, I was not an intense car guy. But my Type S and this forum made me an intense car guy!

Like ggesq said, if the thread annoys you-WALK AWAY! If you feel like posting, maybe site some threads that will help the new poster. Help the OP and make him feel welcome.

POSITIVE FIRST IMPRESSIONS GO A LONG WAY. AND REMEMBER, IT'S NOT WHAT YOU SAY-IT'S THE WAY YOU SAY IT!

Your help and cooperation is greatly appreciated.

I think there should be a minimum (legitimate) post count before being allowed to start a thread, like 15 or so. We have seen this countless times with people starting useless threads when the answer is in a thread above or below the one they posted.

Also maybe take a quiz over the rules of AZ (internet brands), this needs to happen with a few "veterans" as well.

Whiskers is here?!

Also, for a forum suggestion, we should be able to tag our threads, sort of like a hashtag # but if someone was searching for specifics, it would prove to be very useful.

I also agree with McCollins on the 15 posts before being able to start a thread.

And for the love of Acurazine, be able to edit ALL of our posts in OUR own threads.

I totally agree with ggesq and Steven. For TL owners this site is amazing. IMO the quality of related information and content is unsurpassed. It's all because of the collective contribution of fellow TL owners and the work mods do. If I had one complaint it would be that for new ppl navigating the site and finding information can be a little tricky and a bit unintuitive. I can understand having a little fun but we shouldn't let things run amok because at that point fewer and fewer people who actually contribute will stick around.

Just curious how these rules never seem to apply to people in Ramblings sub-section. Every time someone new posts in there, they get treated like shit. If rules are going to be made, they should apply to the whole site.

And yes I know that you need to have "thicker skin" in Ramblings.

Thanks, Steven, I know you do, and I appreciate the time you take to do it, I just think it would be less on you guys if we could make our own edits. It's our threads, why should be be denied control over it? A lot of times, I need to edit a post after the time is up and then I just have to add another post to my thread. And I see threads on here where a lot of people could benefit from adding gathered information to the very first post, even progress threads would change. Adding all your progress to the first page and so on would keep everything organized and the comments and questions could add to the end of the thread.

I see it similar to Inaccurate's weight loss thread, he has a link to his newest posts in the first post...everything is neat and organized and easy to find.

Just a thought but I think this small change could be a major benefit to not only the OP but member's trying to find information.

That would also tie hand-in-hand with adding tags to our threads.

Like the member "Blackflag" looking for black wheels on an NBP Type-S, if a member with that setup tagged his pictures or post with "black on black" or "black type-s wheels", Blackflag probably could have found his answer without making a thread. AND...the less threads, the less clutter, the less reposts...

absurd.

I will preface this by saying that I am not one to go in and take a dump on posts from new members who have questions that have been answered 80608709 times already in other threads. Look at my post history and you could probably count the # of times on one hand that I post something negative or dismissive to those people.

Truth be told I usually don't even open those threads. If I see something pop up about oil, i don't even enter the thread, because there is a 99% guarantee I already know it's some newb who doesn't know how to search. I just avoid it because I know inherently that it's a waste of my time to read.

That being said, what you people are basically saying right now is we're ok with diluting the quality of threads in the forum as more and more newbs come on and are allowed to post questions as new threads for things that have been answered many times already, knowing full well that most of the new threads started are not going to have much quality information because the average person responding in there doesn't want to re-iterate what's already been answered.

and why should they? Are we really in the business of repeating ourselves over and over? Why are we catering to this? This has nothing to do with a welcoming community or not, it's about people expecting and thinking they're entitled to instant gratification of information on their terms (so posting a new thread without even taking 5 minutes to search), which is an insult to the people who have taken the time to put up so much useful information already.

So now, unless the members all respond to these newb threads with holistic, quality information that's already existing in other threads - now for anyone who DOES actually search the forum, it can seem confusing and daunting because there will be 15 threads on the same issue and you have to sift through a bunch of them just to find quality information because 99% of the threads are garbage.

So as a result of sifting through all the useless threads on the topic, now you have even more fluff from people who come on saying "I searched and struggled to find a thread with good information", I've seen plenty of people make a thread that starts with those words (obviously i'm paraphrasing slightly here).

I mean seriously we have threads on oil that have huge, long diatribes from people like IHC who have done all kinds of testing and write-ups about it - are people really going to re-iterate that kind of in-depth knowledge? Hell no, and they shouldn't be expected to. The wealth of knowledge in threads that have already been expounded upon is immense, and by letting these kids come in and dilute the forum, we're doing a disservice to ourselves.

I will continue to do what I always do, which is just avoid the threads as suggested, but holy crap do I ever disagree with the defense of newbs. I am slightly biased because I'm a complete self-starter and believe in trying to figure things out for myself first, rather than just give up after 4.2 seconds and go crying to others for help.

Thankfully I know how much bad-assery is in Acurazine and am confident in continuing to promote it to people I talk to IRL as an awesome site with an awesome community.

Carry on.

Acurazine is a great site for info and learning about your car. Honestly it's only a few members with negative posts in every new thread, but whatever it takes to keep acurazine going.

I have a significantly lower post count than lots of people here, and that's considering I've been on here since owning my 00TL. I agree it can be frustrating reading about another oil, gas, or tranny switch thread as they've all be covered extensively here. I also don't generally respond to threads to crack wise on the new people, but see that it can be annoying to those of us looking for some truly useful information. I'm on Spyderchat.com and MR2Spyder.net as well as here and you can typically see as the original owners of these cars (MR2) are sold and bought by the younger set (as they become cheaper), the newbies come on the forum with a certain degree of attitude, and expect the older members to tolerate that along with the same repeated questions.

I'm in full agreement of the 15 post count before starting a thread (to get the new people in tuned with the threads on here), but also, how about a 'tutorial link' for the new people that directs them/ forces them over to the 3G Garage as if that was reviewed before posting a new thread on something that's clearly covered before, might result in fewer redundant threads? A full review of the 3G Garage really doesn't take up substantial time.

The search function, to me, isn't that bad, and even if there's some fluff I see after a search, if I read a few of the first few pages of threads for a search, I can generally find what I was looking for. Newbie or old member, there's really not a reason they can't search. It's good to be interested in the TL and learn as much about it as possible. It's quite a bit different to ask to be spoon fed information that's readily available.

I'm happy to have been a member here for all the time I've been here. Azine is a great site, but I think a lot of us don't want a lot of useless threads posted that we would have to weed through in a search.

Unfortunately, I sincerely doubt that members will ever be given the ability to edit their posts outside of the alloted edit time.

It's the Internet- we're not going to have an IQ test for people to join and participate on AcuraZine. We want AcuraZine to be the go to place for people who need information in the model specific forums and if they wanna screw around, off to the Off Topic section is readily accessible. Remember guys, I'm not saying you can't have fun here. If someone STARTS off right out the gate being a douche, then we let the members have some fun. Hell, I've moved several threads to Ramblings myself just for the entertainment factor. What is bothering us is when n00bs start threads with legitimate questions, albeit a question that has been asked numerous times before- get treated like shit. That, is the problem.

There's not going to be a minimum post count requirement anytime in the foreseeable future IMHO (not an official answer) but thank you for the suggestion. Admin is obviously watching this thread and if admin and IB determine it to be in the best interest then so be it.

The rules for the model specific forums are obviously different than the rules in the Off Topic section of the forum. There's a reason for that. People come to the model specific forums for information. People go to the Off Topic section for various reasons but the way rules are enforced there are not the way they are here.

Regarding the 'diluting the forum' comment. Well, that certainly is one way of looking at it. Here's a different perspective. New member joins AZ for whatever reason. n00b starts a thread asking what gas to use....then gets bashed and leaves AZ. Next n00b does the same thing. So on and so forth. NO ONE is required to regurgitate information to anyone so if IHC or anyone else for that matter does not want to explain air filters, tranny fluid and oil that is THEIR choice. If you want to post a link to the thread with helpful info, do it. If you want to answer, do it. If you want to ignore it, click somewhere else. Yes, we are trying to cater to everyone- not just the veteran members who got the benefit when they first joined this forum.

Regarding the hashtag comment- I think it's a great idea. Maybe admin can consider this.

I'd like to preface by saying I agree with everything ggesq and SB have said. Everyone was a newbie at one point, so it would be hypocritical to bash someone for asking a question that all of us did not know the answer to at some point in our lives. Point well taken.

However, just to play devil's advocate for a minute...cleaning up the forums is the purpose of the moderators' existence. If the forum became a perfect environment where no one ever got flamed and no one made douchey comments, that would render the moderators' jobs nearly obsolete (aside from editing thread titles ). We all know that would never happen though. We can all agree that ggesq and SB's intent is positive, however, I think it falls on deaf ears. Douchebags will be douchebags. Except for Justin....he's learned his lesson.

As we all know, the search feature here is amazing, better than google probably. Sometimes I search and search and find nothing so I start a new thread. Then the first or second post will be someone posting a link to an existing thread and telling me to search next time. WTF. Just saying.

LMAO. Agreed...the search function can be cumbersome, but it's not useless. You sort of proved that when you say others are able to find links to threads that you aren't able to.

The only thing about the search function that bugs me is if you're searching for a specific word string like, "power steering leak" and if the search comes back with a 50-page thread, it only gives you the link to page 1 of the thread. It doesn't tell you which page the words "power steering leak" are found...you might have to search through dozens of pages to find one post where "power steering leak" is mentioned. Hopefully I'm wrong and there's something I'm missing...

New question, why can't we edit our posts? I can do it at other sites and have never seen a problem with it. So whats the deal?

Edit: Thank God I came back in enough time so that I could capitalize the n in New.

It can become a he said, she said type thing. Especially in disciplinary situations.

As mentioned, if something major needs changed, just contact your friendly local moderator and I'm sure, within reason, they will gladly take care of your editing needs.

You just answered your question because you just edited your own thread

But yea.. I think there is a 5-10 minute window to edit your own posts.

I was trying to make a point. It would be nice to edit your posts because you noticed to didn't capitalize or used the wrong word etc. Sure it can be he said she said bs, but that is what we have private messaging for imo.

perhaps a way to redirect all new member first logins to a thread with all of the service "garages"? seems like half of them dont know the repository of articles exists, or a welcome email with a link to the thread in it.

i mean it seems like we just had 3 timing belt threads created in the past 2 weeks all asking ____

^There you go. That's the best idea I've heard yet. And it's built into vBulletin.

Create a noobie page. Rules, links to the garages, etc.
