Wow Great Gas Mileage on 2nd Major Road trip!
I just returned from our 2nd trip to the San Francisco Bay Area from San Diego today. My car now has 6000+ miles now and my has the gas mileage improved. The amazing thing to me is how good the gas mileage is while doing some highspeed crusing. Here's some tank readings to prove my point:
Tank #1 (SD through LA) : 154 miles @ 5.8 gal - Actual Mpg=26.5 MID=26 MPH=53
Tank #2 (Castaic to Gilroy on 5) : 271 miles @ 9.830 - Actual mpg=27.6, MID=27 MPH = 74
Tank #3 (Gilroy and all over Santa Cruz mtns) : 140 miles @ 6.46 - Actual mpg=21.6, MID= 23 MPH=40
Tank #4 (Gilroy to Castaic) : 272 miles @ 8.6 - Actual mpg=31.3, MID=31, MPH=70
From these findings, the average MPH that your MID calculates is a major predictor of your gas mileage. Normally around town, my MID reads 25mph or less and of coarse the mileage is low around 19 or so.
I think it's amazing to get over 30mpg going 70+ in comfort and style! I saw a few TL going in the opposite direction on 5 but didn't see any going my way otherwise outside of within LA.

One on the right for me
I've also gotten great mileage flying down the 5. I was surprised that even with the long haul over the grapevine the car was still able to get over 415 miles to the tank. It is nice to ride in style and get over 30mpg.

On long hauls at highway speeds-- averaging 60+ -- on I 81 & from Pittsburgh to DC I've done well over 30 mpg, including one trip of 35 mpg. Best mileage seems to be when cruising at an even speed, on cruise control for example, & highway is either flat or somewhat more downhill than uphill. Better mileage than my VW beetle in the 70s got.

Glad to hear about the good milage. I am about to make the trip up to San Francisco from Irvine and then back in early Feb.
Quick question for you guys... which octane fuel do you use... I'm assuming always highest grade, yes?

you always need high octane gas (91) or better. im glad to know the TL gets such decent MPG for its size. the best Ive got when running combined city (70%) and highway (30%) is 25 or so MPG.

I always use 87Octane
I always use the cheap stuff (relative term nowadays:-)
When I take my trips from St. Louis to South Carolina I usually average about 28. (remember I have a lead foot & MUST accelerate much harder than necessary)
When my brother borrows it he always gets over 30.
