If you don't clean your car regularly, and live in a dusty environment..get moleskin..otherwise..keep on rocking

I didn't get moleskin and my tints scratched less than a week after I had them put on. Very hard to notice, but if you really look you can see them. I'm going to see if I can get this done myself.

One on the right for me
Probably true. As I posted earlier, I went without moleskin for a quite some time and nothing was scratched. Only reason I put the moleskin on was because another member was selling it cheap.

When I was considering tint, I went to three shops around here, and they hadn't even HEARD of moleskin.
Just as well. As most people get older, they need MORE light, not less.
So I traded lookin' good for safety.

I've had tint without moleskin for over 3 years now and have no problems with scratches. I live in the dusty Las Vegas desert and I roll my windows up and down ALL THE TIME! My tint guy said moleskin was a scam and I believe him. He said all you need is a good quality tint.
I don't know the brand he uses...

I didn't get moleskin originally.
I was stupid.
I have huge scratches up and down all 4 windows. They're deep and obvious enough to catch your nail on if you skim your finger over them
I installed moleskin (pretty easy just time consuming taking door panels off) and will be getting retinted soon.
This was a 185$ mistake & lesson learned.
Edit: Fail thread revival. lol

Since this thread has been revived and I'm supposed to be getting tint this Thursday I wanted to ask whether the moleskin should be installed prior to tinting or after. I was thinking if it was on prior to tint installation the tint guy might damage the moleskin manipulating the channel. But after the tint is installed you would have to roll the windows down to install the moleskin and then run the risk of scratching the new tint?

I would think if the tint has warranty they should honor it and retint the car. My driver side now has 1 scratch. I am going to clean the window sills. Whats the best way to do this?

I dont think mine has it, it had the tint from the last owner... There are no scratches though. My last TL did have scratches like a bitch though, so when I retint I will put it on there, or cut off the seal that scratches the tint-- does anyone know of any disadvantages to cutting it out? Wind noise, water leaking, windows falling out of tracks???

you should get it. I didnt get it, and have some small vertical scratches. Luckily though the window that has it has a tint defect from when they put the tint on in the front corner (barely noticeable). The previous owner did have them tinted but had to remove due to a ticket and I was hoping they had left the skin in.
I'll just have them do it under workmanship warranty when I feel like it.

Rolling your window 15-20 and no scratch doesn't mean your tints aren't going to eventually get scratched.
When I got my windows tinted back in february (valentines day) everything seemed just fined. I used to deliver pizza back then and I would always roll my windows down to prevent the smell of pizza in the car.
Scratches didn't start showing up til about a good 2-3 months later.
So just because you rolled the windows down a few times and haven't got scratches yet, it doesn't mean you won't get scratches down the road.
If I were you, I'd recommend you to get felt/mole skin installed asap before it's too late and you'll have to go through the hassle of getting your tint redone.
Since it's winter, you won't really be rolling your windows up and down as much as you would during the summer, so for now you should be fine. But as soon as temperatures start to rise and you start rolling your windows down on a daily basis and scratches start to form, don't come back here and say I didn't warn you!
"Everyone" says to get it because they are the ones driving the car and have first-hand experience of having the tint get scratched on them eventually (I'm one of them)
The "tint guys" say no because it's more shit for them to do and if you don't get it installed, and it WILL scratch, than you will have to go back to the "tint guys" and get it redone which means you'll have to pay them again which means they make more money off you. (If you don't have lifetime warranty that is. If you have lifetime warranty than they should redo it for free. But in the end, it's still a hassle to drive back out and wait several hours to get the tint re-done when it all could have just been prevented by getting felt/moleskin installed the first time around)
Either go to a reputable tinter or get it done the first time around. My stupid ass went to a dumb ass tinter and paid $300 w/ lifetime warranty but didn't get felt installed because no one on acurazine mentioned it at the time, and the tint installer didn't even mention it at all or even offer me the service. Now I have scratches on my front 2 windows.
From what I've read, Honda/Acura are notorious for having window tint scratches later down the road after getting tint installed w/out felt/moleskin.
Get felt/moleskin installed and call it a day. End of story.
I personally don't think you need moleskin. I have several friends who have 3G TL and got their car tinted by this guy 2-3 years ago and they roll their window down frequently....no scratches. I barely roll my windows down....even in the summer I do not roll them down unless I need to. Those 15-20 times was on purpose to see if it would scratch. Nothing happened.

My installer stopped installing moleskin but modified some inner lining strip that causes the scratches he said. He also mentioned it would be a good idea to just spray some water into the inner windows from time to time. I haven't sprayed the water but am scratch free for about 8 months now.

The moleskin (felt) is applied to the weatherstrip (pictured above).
I definitely recommend it.
I got my tint done 2 weeks ago, and still havn't rolled down my windows so I can't comment on personal experience with moleskin.
If the shop knows the TL (my shop did!), they would know that it needs moleskin.
My shop installed my moleskin for free, telling me it would have usually cost $10 per door.

35% 3M tint for about a year, no moleskin.
Got scratches about 2-3 weeks after installation. Very very fine hairline scratches, almost unnoticeable. Predominantly on the rear passenger windows. I was upset at first, installer did not provide option for moleskin. But it is really so small that I don't even realize they are there usually.

I spoke with a well know and recommended window tint man yesterday.
I did not bring up moles skin but right away when he saw my car he explained to me that these year TL's were known to scratch tint up due to the plastic that rubs on the inside part of the window.
He said over the years he had tried felts on it and had mixed reviews.
He recommended that he just remove the plastic. Said there would be a gap but it will not affect the window operation.
Has anyone here ever done this or had it done ? Thoughts ?

4 years of owning 3G TL's ('04 and now an '08 TL-S), neither one had scratches in the tint. Both times I had 20% ceramic tint all the way around (except windshield).

When I first got my car, the dealer had to replace my door panel due to it being scratched. I picked the car up and everything looked fine. I returned the next day because the wind noise from that side was very noticeable, also you could look down into the door while the window was up ( big gap).
Turned out they hadn't switched that piece of plastic your tint guy is referring to , over to my new door panel.
So removing that piece= big gap and noticeable wind noise.

Wow thanks for the heads up. Not sure what to do now. I talked to another tint shop and they wanted to charge $30 a window for felt install.

OR
Get it tinted without moleskin and install moleskin yourself. It's just felt on the weather strip.
