I know it has something to do with the airbags but WTF, they did it for the driver. Just use the same seat.
Forgive me if this has been discussed as I am new.

You're right, it is the airbags. There are sensors in the back of the passenger seat for the airbags, and because of them the seatback doesn't heat.

You are right, Carl. It's kind of a lame excuse, but that's the way it is. Hopefully, Acura will improve on their next iteration, but don't count on it.

Who cares - Do you ever sit in the passenger seat? I don't.

And...the driver's seat does not have the sensors (since the OP said "use the same seat"), because it is assumed that the driver is "big/heavy" enough, or positioned correctly for the side airbag to deploy and not seriously injure them.

I also believe it is possible for Acura to integrate both functions in one seat...but they don't.

All those options for one sweet deal - and they skipped that - it's cheap - my wife's $22K Subaru has it. I suspect the RL has it.

I don't know so I'm genuinely asking, does the Subaru automatically disable the passenger airbag like the TL? That is the reason, the TL uses sensors which don't allow for the the heaters in the seatback (at least the way they designed it).

The sensors are there to prevent the airbags from going off if a lightweight passenger were to sit in the passenger seat. Studies have shown that there is more potential to cause more harm by inflating the airbag than just wearing the seat belt.

Right..numerous times I have sat stuff in the seat and it deactivates it. It was like this in my 04 Accord too. I have rode in the passenger side of my car and who cares what they think. They are riding. Enjoy the 5.1 meshed with the 3.2 and take a nap from its glorious sound. (P.S. It is a nice view from over there though )

I had the same problems...which is of course why I stopped in to check out the post!
I agree with others, I will rarely if ever ride as a passenger in my car...plus I don't use the heated seats too often since they take a few horses away from the engine! However, I do agree for $35,000 it should be no different from the driver's seat.

All those functions are electric, and the alternator is going to be spun by the engine regardless of whether or not u have your accesories on or not. THe only thing that can make a difference with HP is the AC. Im pretty sure even the blowers for vented air (non AC) dont affect the HP, because that is also an electric motor.
